Rotimatic is designed to last for a long time! However, like any other electronic device, proper usage and maintenance are required to ensure that it functions without any hiccups. Taking care of your Rotimatic is easier than you think and we are here to show you how! We’ve listed three common mistakes that you can easily avoid when using Rotimatic.

Using butter, ghee or liquid milk with your Rotimatic.

The most common mistake when using a Rotimatic is adding melted butter or ghee in your oil container. Butter and ghee are solid in room temperature and will harden and get stuck in your Rotimatic pipes! This stops your Rotimatic from functioning well. Ghee and butter can be added on your rotis after they are cooked! If you are still keen on experimenting with oil, Rotimatic is compatible with most oils/fats that are liquid at room temperature. Using milk in your water container will have the same effect on the pipes. Milk may clump and dry in the tubes. Having milk residue will adversely affect roti quality.  Using water is the best option for your Rotimatic. If you’d like to have some milk in your rotis, you may add two teaspoons of milk powder into your flour container instead!

Similar to the previous point, the flour container needs to have proper ingredients for it to make  a roti. Rotimatic requires different settings for different flours due to the variances in the protein and starch content between each brand. This affects the viscosity of the dough ball that Rotimatic will knead. Adding chopped vegetables to your flour container will wet your flour and disrupt the settings.  Large chunks of vegetables may also cause flour tunnel blockages!

This does not mean that you can’t be creative or experiment with your rotis! You can play around with your flour and add up to 10% of your flour level of dry, powdered ingredients. For instance, you can throw in powdered spinach or beetroot to your flour mix to make colorful and nutrition packed rotis! Herbs and spices that are dried also contribute well to the taste, texture and look of your rotis.

Not cleaning your Rotimatic properly.

Like a food processor, it’s essential to clean Rotimatic after use! Cleaning is the most crucial part of Rotimatic maintenance. Many issues can be avoided if you clean your Rotimatic thoroughly! For instance, having crumbs in your pans will cause your Rotimatic to stall with issues like folded rotis or undercooked rotis. Not cleaning your dough cup and stirrer will affect the quality of your roti. Cleaning the container slots are also crucial as having protein or sugar residue may lead to bugs and mold!

Bajra roti is a dish from Rajasthan. It is made from bajra (otherwise known as pearl millet) and has a rustic flavor. It is challenging to make but worth the effort! Though not commonly seen on restaurant menus, it is a staple that is both healthy and delicious!

Bajra roti is the ideal carbohydrate to consume for the management of diabetes. It is not only rich in nutrients, but it has a low glycemic index (GI) too!  Low GI foods are foods that release energy slowly when digested. They protect your kidneys from over-exertion and reduce insulin spikes. Thus bajra roti is an excellent option for those who are watching their sugar and weight!

But that’s not all, bajra roti is also high in iron and zinc and has been speculated to be useful for anemics. Its anti-inflammatory properties are essential in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. It also has a high amount of antioxidants and polyphenols making it rich in anti-cancer properties!  To top it off, its high fiber content makes it a great grain to battle constipation!

Despite all the health benefits, many still find bajra roti taxing to cook! The whole preparation and cooking process takes 30 – 45 minutes for even the most experienced chefs. Flattening bajra can be a nightmare as it has very little gluten and will not clump and roll in the same way as wheat flour will. Wrestling the dough with your fingers in an attempt to flatten it will often lead to lumps.  Using a rolling pin may prove to be a challenge as the dough tends to stick to it. The final product is hardly ever a perfect circle, and if flattened unevenly bajra roti will not cook uniformly!

Divya Swami Attri, a visual art educator, an artist, a writer, and a mother, spoke with us about her Rotimatic experience, along with the significance of Rotimatic in USA. What was your life like before Rotimatic? What was it like growing up and having to make rotis with the family?

Ans: Up until a year ago, making rotis was a long process, a perpetuation of the traditional style of kneading the dough and churning out the round flat disks with a ‘Belan’. (Rolling Pin: somewhat still standing as a symbol of power for the traditional Indian mothers!)

My mother made sure that I was well trained in the art of making rotis and gifted me with a slender handcrafted belan made of walnut wood. From the first move we made out of India to the subsequent changes of countries and houses, the first thing that I would always pack with a sense of urgency was the indispensable  “Chakla-Belan”. Everything else could be substituted for or had an alternative, but where could I find a walnut wood belan in the village of Stotfold (our first hometown in the UK)! This worried me and so the chakla-belan duo went on traveling with me, packed and boxed to the 12 houses and 4 countries that we lived in in the last 20 years!

Was a home-cooked meal more of a duty, or a creative outlet back then?

Ans: Home cooked meals have always been an integral part of the Attri lifestyle. Back then doing chores definitely felt like a duty, since one had no choice but to do it. Yet sometimes being a part of elaborate meals preps was fun.

Sometimes my sister and I would take turns to make the meals independently and show our creativity through trying out different cuisines and recipes. Of course, the preparations would sometimes go awry or the recipes fall short in taste. So, we had to face the brunt of one of the sharpest critique, our mom, but it all went along in the spirit of learning and enjoying the food.

Even today,  we all live in different parts of the world, but the one common thread of discussion between us is home cooked food! Our WhatsApp group is flooded with pictures of our dinner party spreads, Sunday lunches, healthy breakfast recipes and such. You can imagine when I got the Rotimatic the excitement was palpable to my family, sitting thousands of miles away!

How do you feel about things being different for your daughter, and other children, with a smart and automated kitchen?

Ans: Things have changed drastically for my kids growing up here in US and having the presence of automated devices in the kitchen to work with. Certainly, it has made cooking more gender-neutral. My teenage daughter has taken a back seat from the kitchen these days as my college-going son has taken over the kitchen with a bang! He is learning how to cook these days as he will move into his own apartment soon. Both of them fully realize the benefits of home cooked meals and are gaining independence trying out various things.

My mantra to them is, “Keep it simple but fresh!” I see the delight in my son’s eyes when he whips and tosses the food onto the plate before us and when my daughter’s fancy platter makes it onto her Insta story we know that she is genuinely happy about her newly acquired skills!

How have rotis remained a big part of your household’s diet in the USA?

Ans: As I mentioned before the “Chakla Belan” never left us and moved with every new house and country we move into! My husband travels around the world for work and gets to eat at some of the most exotic and exorbitant restaurants, but the one thing he looks forward to coming home is freshly cooked Rotis; soft on the edges, crispy in the center with a dollop of ‘Desi Ghee’ pooled in!

It is his comfort food and I find it equally satisfying to serve him hot Rotis fluffed up and served with love. With the launch of Rotimatic in USA, it was a huge relief for me.

How does Rotimatic succeed in reminding you of the taste of home?

Ans: When I first used my  Rotimatic I was a bit skeptical, wondering how a smart machine would replace the touch of a human hand and how will my family react to it. But all of my fears dissipated as soon as the warm whiffs of organic and earthy flavors started filling up my kitchen. The fresh smell of cooking dough brought an immediate sense of well being and comfort to me, filling me with thoughts of thankfulness and gratitude! That powerful moment remains etched in my mind as it was then that I understood myself to be one of the few privileged enough to use such a  machine.

Have your friends, not of the South Asian diaspora expressed interest in the Rotimatic or at least the idea of a smart and automated kitchen after witnessing your Rotimatic?

Ans: Absolutely! My colleagues at work have often found me talking about the convenience of using Rotimatic and find it very interesting to see how much time and importance home cooked food takes for people of the South Asian diaspora. I had invited a few of my non-Indian colleagues for lunch a few years back and had actually given them a demonstration on how to make a roti. They found it very interesting to see the demo but probably never gave it a try. I guess it’s time to set up a lunch date soon and this time they can probably see the automated version of making a roti!

This one’s trivial! What’s the next kitchen chore you’d like to see automated?

Ans: Any chore that machine takes over is very exciting to me. It brings comfort and time-saving value, in the very busy lifestyle we lead. I think that the dishwashers should become more customized and automated enough to load and unload by itself!

This June will mark 10 years of hard work and passion that has gone into Rotimatic. The product itself only entered the market in 2016, sure, but like most success stories, it’s the journey to our destination that has defined us at Zimplistic.

They’re joined by EDBI, a premier Asian investor firm that is the investing arm of Singapore’s Economic Development Board. The two powerhouse investors come together as Rotimatic partners at a time when we are rapidly evolving and innovating to make Rotimatic a gadget of the smarter kitchen.

Lost and Founders

Co-founders and Co-CEOs Pranoti Nagarkar and Rishi Israni hatched an idea after sharing their frustrations in the kitchen as a working couple. A wholesome home-cooked meal always felt like a far-fetched dream with most of the hours spent at work and on the commute, leaving very little time and energy to settle down and prepare rotis.

And that’s the thing about rotis, isn’t it? A staple to the Indian subcontinent in the world, well over a million households spend painstaking hours mixing, kneading, flattening, and then cooking rotis – and the perfect puff of a roti remains elusive if they aren’t cooked precisely and expertly.

So two engineers – one with expertise in mechanical, and the other in software, sat down to first conceptualize an integrated solution, before materializing it. 10 years later, Pranoti had this to say:

The timely Series C funding has presented us with exciting opportunities, but where there are opportunities, there will be expectations. On a seemingly regular Saturday, Zimplistic office was brimming with excitement. The most unflappable in our team was caught gushing and blushing. How could they resist?

We shared our love for rotis with our favourite cricketer of all time. One of the most legendary batsmen ever, the king of test cricket, former West Indian captain, Brian Lara!  

Brian was intrigued by Rotimatic and impressed with all the hard work and technology that went behind its invention.

He enthusiastically heard all about the evolution of Rotimatic over the years, toured around our office, tried the different Rotimatic roti recipes, recollected fond memories with the Indian cricket team and of course posed with the team for selfies :)

After understanding all the inventions that made Rotimatic possible, Brian admired the spirit of perseverance and resonated with the importance of “preparation before proceeds”.

In Brian’s words, For me preparation was everything. If I didn’t prepare properly, I wasn’t going to score runs. One of my favourite sportsmen, Michael Jordan said that he practised so hard that when he got into the match it was like cruise control, he knew what he was doing. I suspect in this environment it’s almost the same. You spent so many years building a product that eventually it is going to stand the test of time. I am really proud to be here and really proud of you guys for building something that is so exciting. For us West Indians, we have a lot of rotis and stuff like that. So it’s pretty cool to see what’s going on here. Well done!” 

To our delight, Brian is also a fan of rotis, he understands the art and science behind the roti-making process.
We were glad to know that rotis are very widely consumed in West Indies and learned about a popular West Indian roti-dish called Double Trinidad/ Doubles. Doubles essentially is made of two barras (flatbread) stuffed with curry channa (spicy chickpeas). Among South Asia recipes, Brian says it’s closest to ‘Chhola Bhatura‘.

Planning a party can seem like a daunting task and if it’s a party with kids, the challenges double. But with these roti recipes from the in-house chef at Rotimatic, we have got all bases covered.  Here are three roti recipes that are healthy, quirky, easy to prepare and most importantly, loved by all. As you will see, rotis are extremely versatile and can be used in various cuisines from Pizzas to Quesadillas! Hope these trigger some more fun and healthy roti ideas!

 Margheroti Pizza

Who says pizzas are junk and unhealthy? Try the Margheroti Pizza loaded with mozzarella and made of whole-wheat flour. It barely takes any time to prepare, and makes for the perfect comfort food. Kids LOVE it! When too many guests turn up, Margheroti Pizza saves the day. The maximum roast level in Rotiamtic is ideal for the base of Margheroti Pizza.

The Recipe for Margheroti Pizza:

Ingredients
1/2 canned Tomato Pasta Sauce, 300g
1pkt Fresh Mozzarella, cut into small pieces
5 stems Basil leaves, roughly torn
1 tbsp Garlic, finely chopped
1 Medium size onion, small diced
Olive oil, Salt

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat oven to 180 °C, stand by baking paper & tray.
Step2: On a medium heat pan, drizzle some olive oil. Sauté garlic and onion until caramelized. Add in pasta sauce and mix well. Remove from heat.
Step 3: Take a fresh roti, lay it on the baking paper.
Step 4: Spread the tomato sauce in the center. Leave some gap from the edges.
Step 5: Break the mozzarella cheese and place it gently onto the sauce. Drizzle some olive oil. Slide them into the oven. Bake for 4-5 minutes.
Step 6: Scatter basil leaves on the top. Season with salt. Ready to be served.

Spinach and Cheese roti Quesadilla

One word for this roti recipe- Yum! It has cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese, what else you need, right? But for the health freaks out there, it even contains nutrition of spinach which provides your body with required iron. This recipe has a tradition of stealing the spotlight of the party.

The Recipe for Spinach and Cheese roti Quesadillas:

Ingredients
1 bunch Spinach, roughly chopped
3 cloves Garlic, finely chopped
1 tbsp Butter
Mozzarella Cheese (shredded)
Cheddar (shredded)

Instructions
(2-4 servings)

Step 1: Put butter on a medium heat pan. Add garlic and sauté until golden brown. Add spinach into the pan, cook for 7 to 10 minutes or until softened. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat, set aside.
Step2: Take a fresh roti. Spread the shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese evenly. Spread about 2 tbsp of sautéed spinach on top of the cheese and place another fresh roti on top.
Step 3: Pan roast the filled roti until the cheese melts. You can also use a sandwich toaster to melt the cheese. This will bring a crisp texture to the roti and they are ready to serve.

Smoked Salmon and Lemon Crème Fraîche

This smoked salmon and lemon Crème Fraîche is simply scrumptious – all the flavours work so well together smoked salmon, lemon, sour cream….what’s not to love? With less than 3% fat and a tangy flavour that works in both sweet and savoury dishes, crème fraîche is the ideal ingredient for healthier cooking.

The Recipe for Smoked salmon and Lemon Crème Fraîche:

Ingredients
100g Smoked salmon
2 tbsp Crème Fraîche or Sour Cream
2 tbsp Lemon juice
1 tsp Lemon zest
Fresh dill (garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: To make lemon sauce, mix crème fraîche or sour cream with lemon juice and lemon zest in a small bowl

Step2: Take a fresh roti, cut it into 4.
Step 3: Tear smoked salmon into bite-size pieces and lay them onto the cut roti.
Step 4: Put lemon cream on top. Season with dill and they are ready to be served.

At the Singapore National Day Rally speech last evening, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong recognised Rotimatic as an innovation that will enable families to enjoy fresh rotis and chapatis without the women having to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

We also had the honour of serving fresh Rotimatic rotis to the guests at the reception dinner post the speech.
