The advent of automation into the domestic sphere has introduced a new genre of self-sufficient kitchen appliance – automatic roti makers. Machines like Rotimatic keep the authentic taste of traditional cuisines alive.

Automation is not just about our future but also our present. While we are yet to realize our complete potential in robotics and automation, we have come a long way. We have entrusted automated machines with the most crucial of tasks such as bank transactions, health care, and even national defense and security.

The ingress of automation can be understood even more clearly from a prediction made by Professor Henrik Christensen, from the University of California San Diego’s Contextual Robotics Institute. He says that children born this year would never drive cars as self-driving cars would become commonplace by the time they grow up.

Robotics and Automation have also entered our domestic spheres and into the kitchen setting ground for a smart kitchen revolution. One of such machines gaining popularity is the range of automatic roti making machines that keep traditional food alive among the generation pressed for time.

Automation in Your Home

The prototypes of domestic automated machinery, or, domotics, entered homes in the early 1900s. They were powered by gas or electricity. These include washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, sewing machines, and water heaters. Initially, these could only be afforded by the rich and elite. As electricity became available more widely and prices of electrical appliances decreased, they made their way into the homes of the middle-class families. Today, these have become essential household appliances.

The present generation of appliances includes smart gadgets that are equipped with sensors, AI-enabled to upgrade and autocorrect themselves. Their other defining features has them IOT enabled, connecting them to a web interface, operable via smartphones or voice control devices such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

One of the generation appliances, Rotimatic is an automatic roti-maker that’s AI and IoT enabled. There are quite a few automatic roti-makers available in the market but Rotimatic is the first of its kind. You can know more about Rotimatic here.

The Lack of roti making machines

You will find a machine available in the market for almost every task you do in the kitchen, there are mixers, grinders, coffee makers, and dishwashers to name a few.

In comparison, there aren’t automatic roti making appliances available as widely in the market. Roti or chapati is the key ingredient in the meals for about five billion people, and the demand for equipment to make these flatbreads quicker and easier is gradually rising.

One of the major reasons for this could be the fact that roti making isn’t a generic and mechanical process as chopping, grinding or wiping. It is a highly complex task and requires significant human labor. It requires estimating the correct quantity of ingredients for mixing and kneading the dough, and skill to roll it into a perfectly round shape. It continues to know the optimum temperature to roast the rolled out dough to get puffed steaming golden brown rotis.

Making rotis is a skill that is acquired with practice and patience. This makes designing an efficient roti-making machine that is able to perform all of the above processes quite a challenge. There has been some manually operable and semi-automatic roti making devices in the market but that has been sufficiently successful. Recently there have been some attempts at making commercially available automatic roti makers for a household kitchen let us take a look at them:

1. Fortune Engineering Fully Automatic Roti-Making Machine:

Priced at a whopping $4000, this one is suited for making chapatis on a large scale such as in a restaurant. Also, it makes semi-cooked chapatis at the speed of about 800 chapatis or rotis per hour. All you are required to do is make dough balls and put them into the hopper machine. It requires a warm-up time of about twenty minutes.

2. Doughbot by Mukunda Foods:

This one is also suitable for making rotis on a large scale. It is designed to knead the dough, make dough balls, and flatten them into evenly round rotis. However, it doesn’t bake the rotis. That essential and final step in the strenuous roti making process in left out in doughbot.

3. Rotimatic:

This automatic roti maker is designed for a domestic household kitchen. It performs all the steps in the process of roti making from kneading the dough to making dough balls, rolling them into round discs, and baking them under a record time of 90 seconds. Moreover, it allows you to customize your roti as it lets you choose the levels of thickness, the degree of roasting your roti, flour type, and oil content. Branded as a roti making robot, Rotimatic is AI and IoT-enabled.

Advantages of an Automatic Roti Making Machine

  • Preparing roti in an average household requires about an hour every day. An automatic roti making machine saves you time, and since time is money, it saves you both
  • Making rotis implies standing in front of a heat source which can be harrowing, especially during summers. An automatic chapati maker saves you from that ordeal
  • All the rotis made would be of consistent quality, from the first to the last one. Unlike a human, a roti making machine is not influenced by fatigue, irritation or boredom
  • If you are not skilled enough to make perfect round rotis, or living away from home and do not like to store-bought food, an automatic roti maker can make you fresh healthy wholesome rotis
  • It is easy and safe to operate and can be operated by children above a certain age bracket
  • A smart roti maker which is IOT enabled, such as Rotimatic, enabled can be operated via your smartphones. They can follow received instructions to make rotis when you are nowhere in its proximity. This automatic roti maker can upgrade and autocorrect itself. In fact, the rotimatic smartphone application makes rectifying software-related errors possible with the click of a few buttons. The appliance is the size of a microwave and can easily fit into one’s kitchen

Disadvantages of an Automatic Roti Making Machine:

Although the advantages of these machines greatly outnumber its disadvantages, here are a couple of them that can’t be ignored:

  1.   They are expensive with prices above $900
  2.   The rotis prepared using these could feel slightly different from individuals who are accustomed to eating hand-made rotis regularly

To Buy or Not to Buy?

Automatic roti makers are expensive but they are an investment for a better lifestyle, similar to investments that we make in other electric appliances in the house. Moreover, a smart roti maker such as Rotimatic is enabled with sensors, software, AI, and IoT which enhance its performance manifold and makes it worth your money.

The rotis made by automatic roti makers are not the exact replicas of handmade rotis but are just as healthy and fresh. The difference in taste is not as much of a disadvantage and is just a matter of getting used to.

For women who are always grappling with domestic responsibilities as well as career-related pressures, these automatic roti makers can prove to be empowering assistants. For people living away from home or who do not know how to make rotis, these roti makers can bring them a taste of home. For future generations, who will not have to learn to make rotis this could mean a revolution. So is it wise to invest in the new generation of smart automatic roti makers? If you depend on rotis for a good meal, the answer is a definite yes. You can purchase yours from Amazon or the official website.

Changing gender-roles and priorities is making the use of automatic roti-maker machines, in commercial as well as domestic space, a necessity.

Ask any resident of South Asia what their staple food of choice is, chances are the answer will be either rice or, the inevitable roti. The simplest form of Indian flatbreads, roti, has a long history that intertwines it with the culture, traditional practices, and the very fabric of a large segment of the society. So much so that Indians (and inhabitants of its neighboring countries) who have immigrated to foreign nations have passed down the dependence on rotis in meals to their children. Keeping up with changing trends and evolving with the needs of the newer generation, rotis that were once exclusively made manually, are being produced using automatic roti-maker machines.

Rotis and its significance in evolving gender-roles:

The fact that a category of food can be integral to deciding gender roles may sound absurd, but it stands as a well-proven fact. For generations, it has been the women of the house who have been expected to perform kitchen duties, regardless of how time-consuming and mundane it can be. Unlike other dishes, making a roti requires manual labor and constant focus at every step of the process. Needless to say this left women with very little scope to explore their own interests or even have a laid back of relaxation.

The rigid gender roles are not that rigid anymore, and women have started taking out time for establishing their careers. Meanwhile, men have also begun to enter the kitchen and share their long due responsibility of contributing to the household chores. However, even today in homes where couples share the household tasks, the man in the house while contributing to cooking any sort of dish, still shirks from making rotis.

The current dynamics still sees women overburdened with the responsibilities of work as well as home. Since men at large are not trained in the grueling process of roti-making, families often end up ordering food from restaurants or consuming frozen food which has a serious negative impact on one’s health. Given the mounting problems in this regard, the invention of automatic roti-making machines was only natural.

How tedious is the process of making rotis?

Making rotis is an art, an acquired skill rather, and a tedious process.

It does take practice to master it and even after you master it you require patience to make them every single time. Add to it the grind of making rotis daily for a meal, and in many cases, two or more meals. The time involved in making a roti varied from 30 – 45 minutes or more, depending on the size and appetite of the family.

The process begins with mixing dry flour and water to knead the dough to a perfect consistency. The kneaded dough is divided into dough balls of the right size. These dough balls are then rolled into evenly shaped rotis. The rolled rotis are then cooked in a skillet to a golden brown.

To cook them from the inside, they have to be puffed properly which requires practice and skill.

Bearing the heat of the cooking source while making rotis is another challenge in the process.

THE NEED FOR AN AUTOMATIC ROTI-MAKER:

It is a blessing to live in an era where all the domestic chores that would once occupy a person’s time and restrict one’s time to be spent mostly in the house can be performed automatically by machines. We are all familiar with gadgets such as washing machines, mixers, grinders, refrigerators, and sewing machines that have simplified daily living.

The dependence on machines to make life easier is making its way to the kitchen as well with the tedious and time-consuming task of roti-making being taken up by automatic roti-makers. Investing in an automatic roti-maker in such a scenario would soon become a necessity.

Let us make a rough estimate of the required number of rotis in an average household in a week. If a family of four eats rotis once every day and each member eats three rotis then they require approximately 12 rotis at a time. If they eat roti only once every day they require about 84 rotis and roughly seven hours of labor in a week.

An automatic roti-maker will ensure that a family eats fresh and healthy food every day. Moreover, it won’t come at the cost of a person’s sacrifice of time, labor, sleep and at times even a career.

Fundamentals of choosing the best automatic roti-makers:

To choose the right roti-maker you must consider the following pointers:

1. BUDGET:

First and foremost is your budget.

It is said, everything good comes at a price, and so do automated devices.

There is a new market of smart home-products or domotics which are now available for sale. From automated switchboards, temperature controls to smart land mowers and security system – you can get an automated version of any electric home appliances.

Available automatic roti makers are expensive, to say the least. The price-range of automated roti makers isn’t very wide but none of them is priced below 900$.

If that is beyond your budget, you can opt for a hand-operated roti maker which could cost around $25 to $30.

Saving up money to invest in an automatic roti-maker is a smart move that would yield results in the long run. It will improve the quality of your life by saving you time, money and the much-neglected sleep.

2. QUANTITY OF ROTIS REQUIRED:

You must choose a roti-maker based on the number of rotis you require per day.

An average household requires 15 to 20 rotis per day. For that purpose the automatic roti-maker, Rotimatic would make a perfect choice. Other than letting you choose the type of flour, level of thickness, oil content, and roasting, it can dispense 20 rotis at a time with each taking 90 seconds.

However, it is useful to remember that Rotimatic is designed to suit the needs of a domestic kitchen. If you are looking for an automatic roti-maker which can produce rotis on a large scale then you can consider buying Chapati Magic Automatic Chapati Making Machine, Greatcity Automatic Chapati flatbread maker, or Doughbot. These large scale automatic roti-making machines can prepare from 800 to 900 rotis in an hour and are ideal for restaurants where rotis are made in large quantities.

Rotimatic - The Automatic Roti-Maker
Rotimatic – The Automatic Roti-Maker

While Rotimatic is the size of an average microwave the other automatic roti makers are quite huge. Rotimatic can easily fit into a household kitchen, the other roti-makers cannot.

3. REQUIREMENTS IN THE ROTI-MAKING PROCESS:

The automatic roti-makers manufactured by different companies perform the task of making rotis differently. For instance, Chapati Magic Automatic Chapati Making Machine has the mechanism to knead the dough, divide the dough into balls, roll them further into rotis and eventually bake them. On the other hand, Greatcity Automatic Chapati flatbread maker does not knead the dough or make dough balls but flattens handmade dough balls into round rotis and bakes them. The Doughbot is enabled with the mechanism to knead the dough, make dough balls and roll them, but it leaves the task of baking them for the users to perform on their own.

Rotimatic just requires you to put the measured ingredients into the equipment and choose the type of roti you require. It is designed to perform every step necessary for roti making, from kneading the dough, adjusting its consistency, flattening the dough balls evenly, puffing and eventually baking them.

Rotimatic is a hands-free, mess-free, and fully automatic device. Moreover, it is AI and IoT enabled because of which it can autocorrect and upgrade itself. This facility is not available in any other automatic roti-makers.

Final word:

Since automatic roti-makers do not come cheap and are in most cases complicated devices, it is important to analyze and understand your requirements carefully. In order to choose the right automatic-roti maker for yourself, your business or your family, it is advised to do one’s own research and market survey. We hope our brief guide will help you narrow down on the automatic roti-maker ideally suited for you.

We cannot allow years of innovation to be dumbed down into acronyms and gimmicks. It’s time we talked about what really made a smart kitchen.

Artificial intelligence, or A.I. as it is universally and affectionately known, is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans. Robots, essentially, and the belief that they could one day perform tasks like and for humans, is the crux of artificial intelligence.

The Internet of Things, or IoT, is pretty much as it sounds. It’s the marvel of your things, or appliances, being embedded with electronics, software, sensors, or even connectivity, to enable these things to connect and exchange data. This creates opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world, into computer-based systems. In layman, the connectivity of your Rotimatic allows for cutting-edge features like remote troubleshooting, and software upgrades sent straight to your unit. Cool, huh?

Remember the times mummy would get up an hour earlier to prepare your breakfast, or join up with the rest of the family on the dinner table much after everyone else is well fed? It gets labeled a “responsibility” for mummies to feed others before they are fed themselves. As noble and heartwarming as that is, don’t you think it’s time we offered her an alternative that freed her of such demanding expectations?

Measuring, mixing, kneading, flattening, puffing, and then delighting – it’s a tough job description. And to do it daily, and more than once a day, it gets tiring. Us as humans, with access to new and perpetually innovative technology, could make this task easier, surely?

Here’s where A.I. and IoT charm and surprise – to take over the task previously only you (or mummy) could perform, and to perform better. From measuring to puffing, it’s all distilled down to a push of a button – emphasizing on the “automated” definition of the Rotimatic.

Automatic Rotimatic Technology
Automatic Rotimatic

“Automation” is a term birthed from “automatic” which perfectly encapsulates the A.I. and IoT capabilities. The right amount of flour and water? Automated. The resulting dough ball? Perfect, and automated. Flattening the dough ball, heating the roti inside and out so as to achieve a perfect puff? 90 seconds, perfect, and automated.

Perhaps it’s not being celebrated quite like the first washing machine was, or the first coffee-maker, because the concept of a roti-make has existed for a while now. The idea to simplify roti-making has been toyed with, but never quite automated. There is no appliance in the world that learns your preferred roti settings and performs real-time dough ball correction. And more than that, it’s an appliance that gets better with time – with every new recipe software upgrade sent straight to your hardware through Internet connectivity.

The Rotimatic has been a sensation amongst the South Asian diaspora in the UK. If not just making their days easier by pressing a button as compared to ancient traditions of mixing the dough and cooking it on a rock, it gives them the taste of home.

We understand the hesitancy and reluctance to leave something as pure as the taste of mom’s rotis to a modern-day robot, but it is important we keep up with the times. Socializing has become effortless with social media, transportation has reached new heights with the likes of Uber and Tesla.

You could argue food has gotten more convenient, but at the cost of health. Packed and frozen food from supermarkets, or a variety of delivery options for dinner – they’re both meant to provide an easier mean of consuming food and completely takes away the fun and inspiration that comes from cooking a meal in the first place. Isn’t that what a kitchen is for?

Along with the UK, the Rotimatic is available in 11 other countries including USA, Canada, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai.

If you’re looking to be swayed by words of Rotimatic Owners, we’ve got a real-time collection of their thoughts and memories made with their Rotimatic over here.

Residing in Princeton, New Jersey, one Rotimatic user has seen her roti-making experience swap the rolling pin for just the push of a button. Divya Swami Attri, a visual art educator, an artist, a writer, and a mother, spoke with us about her Rotimatic experience, along with the significance of Rotimatic in USA. Grab a cup of tea and sit back – this one’s a lovely read.

Divya Attri - A User of Rotimatic in USA

What was your life like before Rotimatic? What was it like growing up and having to make rotis with the family?

Ans: Up until a year ago, making rotis was a long process, a perpetuation of the traditional style of kneading the dough and churning out the round flat disks with a ‘Belan’. (Rolling Pin: somewhat still standing as a symbol of power for the traditional Indian mothers!)

My mother made sure that I was well trained in the art of making rotis and gifted me with a slender handcrafted belan made of walnut wood. From the first move we made out of India to the subsequent changes of countries and houses, the first thing that I would always pack with a sense of urgency was the indispensable  “Chakla-Belan”. Everything else could be substituted for or had an alternative, but where could I find a walnut wood belan in the village of Stotfold (our first hometown in the UK)! This worried me and so the chakla-belan duo went on traveling with me, packed and boxed to the 12 houses and 4 countries that we lived in in the last 20 years!

Was a home-cooked meal more of a duty, or a creative outlet back then?

Ans: Home cooked meals have always been an integral part of the Attri lifestyle. Back then doing chores definitely felt like a duty, since one had no choice but to do it. Yet sometimes being a part of elaborate meals preps was fun.

Sometimes my sister and I would take turns to make the meals independently and show our creativity through trying out different cuisines and recipes. Of course, the preparations would sometimes go awry or the recipes fall short in taste. So, we had to face the brunt of one of the sharpest critique, our mom, but it all went along in the spirit of learning and enjoying the food.

Even today,  we all live in different parts of the world, but the one common thread of discussion between us is home cooked food! Our WhatsApp group is flooded with pictures of our dinner party spreads, Sunday lunches, healthy breakfast recipes and such. You can imagine when I got the Rotimatic the excitement was palpable to my family, sitting thousands of miles away!

How do you feel about things being different for your daughter, and other children, with a smart and automated kitchen?

Ans: Things have changed drastically for my kids growing up here in US and having the presence of automated devices in the kitchen to work with. Certainly, it has made cooking more gender-neutral. My teenage daughter has taken a back seat from the kitchen these days as my college-going son has taken over the kitchen with a bang! He is learning how to cook these days as he will move into his own apartment soon. Both of them fully realize the benefits of home cooked meals and are gaining independence trying out various things.

My mantra to them is, “Keep it simple but fresh!” I see the delight in my son’s eyes when he whips and tosses the food onto the plate before us and when my daughter’s fancy platter makes it onto her Insta story we know that she is genuinely happy about her newly acquired skills!

How have rotis remained a big part of your household’s diet in the USA?

Ans: As I mentioned before the “Chakla Belan” never left us and moved with every new house and country we move into! My husband travels around the world for work and gets to eat at some of the most exotic and exorbitant restaurants, but the one thing he looks forward to coming home is freshly cooked Rotis; soft on the edges, crispy in the center with a dollop of ‘Desi Ghee’ pooled in!

It is his comfort food and I find it equally satisfying to serve him hot Rotis fluffed up and served with love. With the launch of Rotimatic in USA, it was a huge relief for me.

How does Rotimatic succeed in reminding you of the taste of home?

Ans: When I first used my  Rotimatic I was a bit skeptical, wondering how a smart machine would replace the touch of a human hand and how will my family react to it. But all of my fears dissipated as soon as the warm whiffs of organic and earthy flavors started filling up my kitchen. The fresh smell of cooking dough brought an immediate sense of well being and comfort to me, filling me with thoughts of thankfulness and gratitude! That powerful moment remains etched in my mind as it was then that I understood myself to be one of the few privileged enough to use such a  machine.

Have your friends, not of the South Asian diaspora expressed interest in the Rotimatic or at least the idea of a smart and automated kitchen after witnessing your Rotimatic?

Ans: Absolutely! My colleagues at work have often found me talking about the convenience of using Rotimatic and find it very interesting to see how much time and importance home cooked food takes for people of the South Asian diaspora. I had invited a few of my non-Indian colleagues for lunch a few years back and had actually given them a demonstration on how to make a roti. They found it very interesting to see the demo but probably never gave it a try. I guess it’s time to set up a lunch date soon and this time they can probably see the automated version of making a roti!

This one’s trivial! What’s the next kitchen chore you’d like to see automated?

Ans: Any chore that machine takes over is very exciting to me. It brings comfort and time-saving value, in the very busy lifestyle we lead. I think that the dishwashers should become more customized and automated enough to load and unload by itself!

The best part is the unedited display of Rotimatic’s hiccup when the first time the flour tunnel got blocked. But as shown in the video, it is super easy to clean and the A.I. built in Rotimatic helps it learn to make better rotis the next time! Watch the video above to find out what Mr. Sharma thinks of his Rotimatic.

A Review from a Singapore Customer

Musings of a Fun-Sized Drama Queen, a good blogger, uses humour to make some very relevant points about Indian culture and expectations from men and women. But Rotimatic has been churning its bit of gender equality – one roti at a time. According to the blogger from Singapore, it has freed up women’s time to pursue their jobs, interests, passions and taken away men’s excuse that they do not know how to cook. Now anyone can make rotis with the push of a button!

What she likes about her latest investment is the customization settings. The option of having very little oil in her rotis is a privilege, she says. Plus, she can also adjust the roast and the thickness of the chapatis. Making it perfect for all the members of the family.

Testimonials of a User from California, USA

While most of us often pair rotis with dal and sabzi (all time comfort food!), the humble roti is more versatile than we can imagine. From a platter of kebabs to a healthy fruity dessert, rotis are perfect accompaniment to many dishes.

One fine afternoon, the Rotimatic team got together with some foodies in San Francisco to have fun with rotis. We cooked up a perfect light meal of healthy appetizers and dips to compliment the Rotimatic Rotis.
Since the guests were not familiar with the traditional roti-making process, Pranoti (the co-founder and CTO of Zimplistic) gave them a quick preview of what it takes! The guests took a stab at it as well and sure enough opted to work with Rotimatic rotis instead. Guests were divided into small teams to prepare a variety of internationally inspired tapas recipes.  Once the cooking was finished, everyone shared dishes with each other cocktail party style.

Savouries included:
– Chicken Tikka Kebabs with Tamarind Chutney
– Roti “Pizzas” with Seasonal Toppings
– Roasted Lamb Skewers with Pistachio, Mint, and Yogurt
– Lentil Keema made with Indian Spice and Cilantro Chutney
– Paneer and Broccoli Masala with Fresh Curry Leaves

The dessert was most special!
– Sweet Roti, Cardamon Creme Anglaise, Mango and Coconut

If you’re itching to try some unique recipes yourself, here’s the recipe of the delicious dessert:

SWEET ROTI, CARDAMON CRÈME ANGLAISE, MANGO AND COCONUT

Recipe: Serves 10

Cardamom Crème Anglaise:
2 cups whole milk
2 cups heavy cream
2 Tablespoons cardamom pods, toasted and ground
8 large egg yolks
½ cup sugar
½ teaspoon kosher salt
Ice for ice bath

Make Crème Anglaise: In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, bring milk, cream, salt and cardamom to a simmer. Combine the egg yolks and sugar in a medium bowl and beat, using a hand mixer, until pale, light yellow and thick, about 3-5 minutes. Slowly, add half the cardamom milk mixture to the yolk mixture and beat on low until blended. Add the second half of the milk mixture. Transfer the mixture back to a saucepan and cook over low heat until it reaches 160oF or when the mixture coats the back of a spoon. Quickly remove from heat (It will turn to scrambled eggs if it goes over this temperature) and strain immediately into a bowl placed on an ice bath.

Coconut and Mango Topping:
2 ripe mangoes, diced
1/3 cup unsweetened coconut, toasted 1 lime, zested and juiced
2 teaspoons sugar

Mango Topping: In a medium mixing bowl, add mango, coconut, sugar, lime zest and juice, toss and set aside.

Roti
1/8 cup ghee, melted
1⁄4 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon cinnamon

Brush Roti: Mix together the cinnamon and sugar. Brush the roti with ghee, then sprinkle a generous amount of the cinnamon and sugar mixture.

Serve: Cut roti in quarters. Carefully put 2 Tablespoons of cardamom anglaise in the center with 2 Tablespoons of topping. Roll and eat.
