We tested all types of roti makers available in the Indian and international markets (United States, Canada, Australia, and the Middle East) to determine the best roti maker machine that you can buy.
Roti making is a chore for many, and they wish that there could be a way to make rotis faster and more conveniently, and they turn out as good and even better than the average handmade ones. It is about time that technology helped in developing a solution to ease this task that till some time ago was impossible for machines to achieve.
Fortunately, solutions are available in the market in the form of roti-making machines that vary from basic roti presses to advanced A. I powered fully automatic roti makers and electrical roti presses in the middle. All these options can be confusing, and buying the best roti maker machine can be daunting. So, to make it easy on you, we bought and tested every roti maker machine to bring you this blog.

Different types of roti makers and how they work

Fully automatic roti makers - Rotimatic roti robot review
The answer is in the name. A roti maker is a kitchen appliance that helps you make rotis and sometimes other flatbreads like jowar and bajra rotis, puris, and even parathas. The degree to which they can help you with your roti-making work depends on the type of roti maker used.
Let us explain
There are four essential steps in making a Roti
We need to reiterate these roti-making steps to understand the types of roti makers available in the Indian and international markets, as the various types vary by the degree to which they perform these four steps.
The various types of Roti makers do these four roti making steps tasks to various degrees. For example, as the name suggests, a fully automatic roti maker will do all these steps, so all you need to do is add the ingredients, and it will make the dough, roll the rotis, cook, and puff them.
An electrical roti maker is essentially a press with a heating element. You must prepare the dough and then put a ball into the roti maker, pressing it into shape. The electrical roti maker also has a heating element that cooks and even puffs the roti.
The roti press or mechanical roti maker is the simplest of these devices. Like an electrical roti maker, you have to prepare the dough. The roti press simply helps you press the dough to shape it into a raw roti. You still must do the last two steps using a tawa, so in a way, this is only a substitute for the rolling part of roti making.
Here is a table that explains this better

If you make rotis for your family
The answer seems to be a firm yes, and the reason is also quite intuitive. Making rotis and that too multiple times a day is hard work. Indeed, one gets better with practice, but even then, it is a chore, and if there is a better way to make rotis, it would be welcome.
You may enjoy making rotis for your family; even in that case, there would be days when you'd be too tired or preoccupied to make rotis, and on those days, a roti maker would be a blessing.
If you have help making rotis
Even if you hire someone else to cook for you, this person might come once in the morning and cook rotis for multiple meals in one go. In that case, you will end up eating cold rotis made in the morning all day, and it would be a blessing to have a roti maker using which you can at least make fresh rotis for meals.

Roti maker cons |
Saves time |
Cleaning could be an issue |
A healthier option to frozen rotis |
Non-automatic ones need practice to perfect |
Just as good as homemade rotis |
Some types might not make good-quality rotis |
Electrical and automatic roti makers cook the roti using heated plates. There have been health concerns related to nonstick coatings used on such appliances, so it is natural for people to have health concerns about roti makers. Overall, it is best to know if the roti maker you buy is made of food-grade materials so that you can be assured that there are no health concerns.
Nonstick coatings in roti makers
There has been much concern about the ill effects of using Teflon for nonstick coatings. This is because PFOA, a chemical used to make Teflon affects the liver, stunts growth and development, and even causes cancer. Fortunately, this chemical has been banned, and most of the Teflon made after 2013 is safe.
However, some countries still manufacture Teflon using PFOA, so if any roti maker that you had considered buying has nonstick coatings, it is a good idea to check with the manufacturer if the coating was made with PFOA.
Materials used in other components that touch the roti
You should also check with the manufacturer if the other components of the roti maker are made of food-grade materials, especially plastics that are used. If you're in the United States, it is a good idea to check if the materials are FDA-compliant (or any other equivalent rating in other countries)
As mentioned before, the roti makers available in the Indian and international markets can be divided into three types depending on the degree of automation they offer.
To compare the features of these three types, we created a table of the main features that most concern the buyers.

To create this table, our team tested all three roti maker types. You can learn about our experiences after this.
Ruby from our tested manual and electrical roti makers firsthand for this review.
Ruby tested a manual roti press and an electrical roti maker, while Kimaya tested a fully automatic roti maker, and we have compiled their experiences to create this table that will help you make a conscious choice.
As mentioned in the last section, the most straightforward roti maker is a fully mechanical one, a roti press. It is entirely manual and only serves the purpose of a glorified rolling pin as it just rolls the dough into a roti shape. You still have to cook it on a tawa.
I bought a nonstick roti press on Amazon from Bornix because it was well-rated. I used this roti press for a week to learn almost everything about it.
What's in the box?
This is what the roti maker looks like. It is black and overall, I think that the make of this product is good, it seems durable and well made.
This roti maker is quite simple to build. It has two pans and a handle and that is about it.
How the Bornix Roti Press Works
This Roti press helps you flatten the roti from a dough ball. This time I wanted to make puris using this roti maker as it will flatten the puri, and then I can fry it.
Step 1: The first step is to make the dough. I prepared the dough the traditional way by mixing and kneading by hand. I saw YouTube videos on this topic that recommended that the dough be slightly lean in consistency.
Step 2: I made a dough ball, opened the roti maker, and placed it on the lower plate. Next, I closed the upper plate to press the roti. The first time I spoiled the roti, I used flour to ensure that the roti did not stick to the plates. However, this did not work as the roti ended us sticking to the plates, and it was ruined.
Step 3: I applied oil this time to the dough, and here we get our first roti. Next, I opened the top lid to see if the pressed roti was in the right shape, and it was!
Step 3: As I have already applied the oil to the roti, I simply thought of making puris. I placed it into the preheated oil in a kadhai. And it was the same as handmade puris.
Nonstick roti maker roti/puri quality
As this nonstick roti maker/press is to flatten the dough ball and make a chapati, all you have to do is place the dough and press, so it's pretty easy to use.
I was already aware of the type of dough required for any kind of Roti press helped me to get satisfactory results.
So here is the first roti I flattened successfully using this roti press.
And here is how the rotis looked like after being cooked.
Time and effort it takes to make rotis in a nonstick roti/puri maker
Not including how long it took to prepare the dough, it took me 5 seconds to flatten the roti in my desired shape.
Quality of rotis made by the Bornix roti maker
I understand that the quality of rotis made with a roti/puri maker can vary depending on various factors, including the specific model and brand of the roti maker, the ingredients used, and the technique employed.
But if I talk about my personal experience, I would instead traditionally flatten my roti as it doesn't help me save time or make the process easy. It might be a better option for a bulk puri-making process where you do not need to worry about the thickness of the puri or the shape.
I found most rotis to be chewy, and they were never puffed well and were unevenly cooked.
The verdict. My honest opinion after using this roti press for a week
I have summarized the pros and cons of this roti maker in the table below.
Roti/Puri press roti maker pros |
Roti/Puri press roti maker cons |
Economical |
The dough needs to be prepared, so roti making process is time-consuming |
Makes round-shaped rotis |
It does not cook rotis for you as it helps you with flattening it only |
It's pretty simple to use |
Rotis are small; you have to apply oil to flatten them. It's more like a puri maker.
|
Lightweight and easy to store |
Uneven shapes |
Requires as much cleaning as, say, two pans, so maintaining is not difficult |
Stickiness is an issue with the plates |
My main problem with the roti/puri press is that it is typically a puri maker.
I tried rotis by applying dry flour to the dough and the plates, but it didn't work. On the second try, I tried using oil, and I got rid of the stickiness problem, but again, you cannot make rotis where you have applied oil. It's a good option for puris; I have to admit.
My rating
Based on my experience, I would rate a manual roti maker 2 out of 5.

An electrical roti maker is a slightly more advanced device than the roti press because it not only presses the dough into the shape and thickness of a roti, but it also flattens it by pressing it into the shape of a roti, just like how a roti press does but then it takes it further by cooking it and even puffing it. This is because the plates of an electrical roti maker have a heating element built-in with a thermostat to cook and puff the roti.
Ruby from our team bought a prestige roti maker from Amazon India and used it to make rotis for weeks before writing this review of an electrical roti maker. So over to Ruby so she can share her firsthand experience with this electrical roti maker.
First impressions and what is in the box
Here is my personal experience using Prestige electric roti maker.
I bought his brand because this product is the most well-rated electrical roti maker on Amazon India.
This is how the Prestige roti maker box looks like
This is what the roti maker looks like. It is black and overall, I think that the make of this product is good, it seems durable and well made.
This roti maker is simple in build. It has two pans, a handle, and a chord to plug into an electrical socket.
There is a control knob that allows you to adjust the roast level, and power indicators show if it is on.
How the Prestige electrical roti maker works
I was pretty excited to use this to make my first roti. It seemed simple enough to operate, but little did I know that the learning curve was pretty steep on this roti maker as it takes some practice to get the rotis right.
Using the electrical roti maker
Step 1: The first step is to make the dough. I prepared the dough the traditional way by mixing and kneading by hand. It was recommended in YouTube videos that the dough should be slightly thin in consistency. Meanwhile, I preheated the roti maker for 2 to 3 minutes to prepare it for making rotis.
Step 2: I made a dough ball, opened the roti maker, and placed it on the lower plate. Next, I closed the upper plate to press the roti. Next, I opened the top lid to see if the pressed roti was in the right shape.
Step 3: The roti started cooking; soon I turned it over and let the other side cook as well. Now you must turn over the roti and let it cook from the other side too. You need to keep the lid open when you do this.
Step 4: After the roti is cooked from both sides, it is time to puff it. If I were doing this the traditional way, I would need to transfer the roti to an open flame and let it puff. In the case of the electrical roti maker, you flip over the roti and rest the lid with the top heating element lightly on the roti. After this the roti should automatically start puffing.
Electrical roti maker roti quality
My first experience was quite bad. I was not able to flatten the roti properly. This is what the result looked like.
I tried again and failed on my second attempt. That was probably because I more or less followed the same process.
In my third attempt, I decided to change the process.
On my 3rd try, I got a fully puffed roti that was not as chewy as the ones I had made before. You need to get the cooking timing right if you let the roti cook for too long, it will get too chewy. I found most rotis to be quite chewy, and they were never puffed well and were unevenly cooked.
Time and effort it takes to make rotis in an electrical roti maker
Not including how long it took to prepare the dough, it took me 1-2 minutes to get the roti to cook thoroughly. You must also preheat the roti maker for 3-4 minutes before making the rotis. So, in total, I would take a maximum of 6 minutes to make the first roti and 2 minutes after that for every roti.
The verdict. My honest opinion after using this electrical roti maker for a week
I have summarized the pros and cons of this roti maker
Electrical roti maker pros |
Electrical roti maker cons |
Economical |
The dough needs to be prepared, so roti making process is time-consuming |
Makes round-shaped rotis |
Does not cook rotis evenly and does a poor job of puffing them |
Not such a complicated device though it does have a steep learning curve |
Rotis are not soft and end up being very chewy
|
Light weight and easy to store |
Heats up considerably, so must be handled carefully |
Requires as much cleaning as, say, two pans, so maintaining is not difficult |
The handle is frail and not of good build |
My main problem with the electrical roti maker is that it is not easy to use.
I will buy a roti maker if it makes my life easier by helping me make rotis conveniently. The electrical roti maker does not look like a machine is too complicated; after all, it has one knob to set the heat level and two nonstick pans where your roti is pressed and cooked. But things are not as easy as they look. It takes a lot of practice to make okay rotis using this device. Making a decent roti took me 2-3 days of regular use. It takes a lot of practice and getting used to; you must look for the right temperature and get the right timing to get a well-cooked roti. After using it for some days, I noticed that the handle was coming loose and it would also get very hot once you had made several rotis.
My rating
Based on my experience, I would rate an electrical roti maker 2 out of 5.

As the name suggests, the fully automatic roti maker is a sophisticated device that does all four stages of the roti making process. All you must do is add the ingredients (flour and water) and it mixes them to make a dough, makes a dough ball and flattens it into an uncooked roti and even cooks and puffs it, all this automatically and without any human interference.
Rotimatic is the world's first fully automatic roti maker that was launched in 2016 and has been the original roti-making robot in the world. Over the years, many companies have tried to reverse engineer the Rotimatic but they have not been able to make even a copy that is half decent.
Kimaya an intern with Zimplistic Pte. Ltd. went to their Singapore office, where she got a chance to test the Rotimatic fully automatic roti maker to learn more about it. This is her experience which should help you compare it with the other roti makers reviewed in this blog.
First impressions
It is large, looks quite sleek, and the build quality of this roti maker is outstanding. To those accustomed to a regular electrical roti maker (I had seen one of my neighbors use an electrical roti maker to make rotis), the Rotimatic seems completely different.
Several Rotimatic fully automatic roti makers being tested at the Zimplistic labs in Singapore
The roti maker is supposed to be kept on a kitchen shelf next to a power outlet from where it should not be moved frequently, so it is not very portable. There are three containers; the largest is for the flour used to make the rotis, the next is a container for water, and the smallest is for vegetable oil. The oil is used in minimal quantities to prevent the rotis from getting stuck to the heating plates used to cook them.
There are two doors; one is from where the prepared roti is released; opening this door shows the heating plates used for cooking the rotis, which makes me curious about how this is done.
Another door gives access to the kneading area, where the flour is mixed with water to make a dough ball.
The build is quite good, and it is evident that they have used quality materials in their construction.
Though large, the built is relatively compact, so the Rotimatic can be placed on any kitchen slab.
I was unable to record videos in the office due to privacy concerns, so here is a video from the Rotimatic YouTube channel which describes the machine and its parts in detail
Using the Rotimatic
The team over at the Singapore office was kind enough to teach me how to make rotis using the Rotimatic. Since this is a fully automatic roti maker, the process is straightforward. One must fill the flour container with the recommended flour brand, add water and some oil, select the correct settings using simple buttons, and press the play button (yes, there is a play/pause button to start/pause roti making.
Using the buttons, you can select the type of roti (the Rotimatic makes more than just rotis, but more about that later), the thickness, and the roast level. The interface is simple and easy to understand as there aren't multiple buttons, and the menu is intuitive.
Once you press play, the machine makes sounds like a food processor. I could see some activity in the flour container and bubbles in the water container indicating that the water and flour were being mixed. This took around 5 minutes and then the roti making process began.
This was fascinating as I could see the dough being mixed with water and kneaded into the right consistency. Then the machine rolled the dough into a dough ball, which was transferred using a clever mechanical arm into the pressing area beyond the other door.
Here a plate descends and neatly presses the dough ball into the shape of a roti. Next, a kicker pushes the uncooked roti to the front where another plate cooks it, this one with a heating element. The motion of this plate was fascinating as it first cooked the roti and then puffed it as well. It was as if this plate mimicked the manual roti-making process in which the uncooked roti is first cooked on a tawa and then put on a naked flame so that it puffs.
I was surprised to see how well the roti puffed. Next, the kicker pushes the cooked roti out of the machine.
After 5 minutes of warm-up, the Rotimatic makes one roti in approximately 1 to 1.5 mins.
Rotimaker roti maker roti quality
Now it was the moment of truth, or it was time to taste the rotis. While the rotis were being made, the air was filled with the delicious smell of rotis cooking. I tasted the rotis as they were prepared, and this is my verdict based on various parameters.
Self-assessment of Rotimatic roti quality
I had some more questions about this roti maker and Shrugal from the Singapore office was kind enough to address all of them.
Shrugal told me that this fully automatic roti maker was the only one of its kind, it is almost a robot and is built on the latest tech used in cutting-edge industries. He told me that the brain behind the machine is A.I powered it so that the machine keeps improving as it makes rotis. It gets feedback from various sensors and from the user, and based on this, it iterates the variables to produce the perfect roti every time.
In addition to making atta rotis, the Rotimatic makes rotis from other flours like Bajra and Jowar and puris and pizza bases. There is a setting where the Rotimatic makes the dough ball and presses it to make uncooked discs that can be fried to make puris or made into pizzas by adding sauce, toppings, and cheese. I was told that the team continuously works on other recipes that will be available in future updates. Since the Rotimatic is an IoT device, these recipes will be downloaded even to older versions of the machines connected to the internet, almost like an application on your phone that silently updates itself and gets new features.
Maintenance and cleaning
In spite of the seemingly complicated make of this roti maker, cleaning is easy and takes a few mins a day and a few mins a week. The parts in touch with the dough are easily accessible and can be removed and cleaned. The parts are dishwasher safe, so you can just pop them in at the end of the day and reassemble them again the next day.
Another wonderful thing I found out was that, since this is an IoT device, most issues can be fixed remotely by downloading fixes to the machine. The company provides doorstep pick-up and drop in case it needs repairs, but Shrugal told me that most issues can be fixed remotely.

It's a delicate dance, and only the bravest of chefs dare to attempt it. But once you've tasted a perfect roti, you'll know it's worth all the blood, sweat, and tears (okay, maybe just sweat).
Rotimatic founders Pranoti and Rishi showcase the art of making rotis from scratch to at 12.28
Growing up, the message was clear: women were the bravest of chefs in the kitchen and you must emerge victoriously with “gol rotis”. That means kneading the dough and flipping perfect rotis on a tawa. I watched my mom, aunts, and grandmas go through the motions of cooking and serving with such grace that it made me wonder if they were secretly part-time ballerinas.
But as I grew older, I started to question the gender dynamics of the roti-making process. Was there a hidden cost to all this domestic duty? Did the men in the family secretly fear the power of a perfectly round roti? And most importantly, why did the patriarchy get to claim the reward of delicious food without lifting a finger in the kitchen? The more I thought about it, the more I realized that maybe it was time to spice up the old recipe for gender roles in the kitchen.
Though the world is changing, and the gender roles are blurring, the narrative is still stuck in the 20th century for millions of women. So, let’s address some common comments still encountered by the women of today and best way to address them as a society.
Ah, the age-old question that most woman making rotis has heard a million times: "Why can't you make rotis like my mother?" Well, let me tell you something, buddy. Did you know? Making rotis is not a competition, and your mother's rotis are unfortunately not the gold standard for every woman out there. Last I checked, every woman is a unique individual with her own set of skills and talents, and making rotis may or may not be a part of the set.
Women have been relegated to the role of the cook and caretaker for far too long, and it is definitely time we recognize their contributions and give them the respect they deserve. By constantly comparing your mother and her cooking abilities, you're perpetuating the idea that women should have a default, in-built roti cooking abilities and sadly that’s not how biology works!
Say if someone constantly compares a guy’s driving skills to an imaginary male benchmark, they are perpetuating the notion that men have to inherently possess superior driving skills because duh ‘you are a man’. Newsflash! That is not how any man wishes to be stereotyped.
So, the next time your beautiful brain is tempted to ask a woman why she can't make rotis like your mother, read the previous paragraph out loud and repeat as many times as necessary. And in the meantime, why don't you try making rotis yourself? Who knows, maybe you'll discover a newfound appreciation for the hard work that goes into your belly.
Ah, the classic pseudo math that a woman's worth is directly proportional to her ability to make rotis. It's funny how such a simple task can be used to judge a woman's character and her potential as a wife or mother.
But let's be real and break the truth here, a woman's ability to make rotis is not directly proportional to her qualities as a person. If a woman chooses to make rotis, that's great. But if she doesn't, that's also great. It's her choice, and no one should be shamed for it. So next time someone tries to diminish a woman's value based on her roti-making skills, just roll your eyes and ask them if they really think domestic skills are the only things that matter in life. Trust me, they'll end up feeling more foolish than someone who's tried to eat a roti with a fork and knife.
Let’s turn the table here, shall we? If a guy were to be labelled a bad husband or a father for not possessing some magical power to fix every electrical gadget in the house, I am pretty sure your BP count is bound to rise. Alas not everyone went to “Electrical Academy of Men”!
So, to address the statement, this is the final verdict. A woman who can't make rotis is still a good wife and still a good mother if she loves and cares for her family, raises her children well, and contributes to society in her own way!
Nothing screams feminism like reducing a woman's worth to her roti-making abilities. Should we also judge men based on their ability to make rotis? Or is it just women who get the pleasure of being defined by their domestic skills?
But hey, if we're going to talk about basic skills for women, how about we start with things like financial literacy, self-defense, and negotiating for higher salaries? You know, skills that will actually help women navigate the world and thrive in their careers, rather than just making sure their husbands and in-laws are well-fed.
And let's not forget that cooking is not just a woman's responsibility. It takes two people to make a baby, so it should take two people to feed that baby. Plus, cooking can be a fun and enjoyable activity for anyone, regardless of gender.
Alright, let's get real for a minute here. If a little kid can roll out a roti, there's no reason a full-grown man can't do it too. It's time to break those tired old gender norms and see who's really got the skills to pay the bills (or, in this case, make the perfect roti). I mean, who wouldn't want to witness some friendly competition and good-natured ribbing between family members as they strive to create the ultimate roti?
So, let's forget about who's "supposed" to be doing what in the kitchen and focus on what really matters: delicious food that brings people together. Maybe we'll even discover some hidden talents in the process. Who knows, maybe dad will turn out to be the roti-making champion of the household. It's time to embrace gender-neutral cooking skills and let the best roti-maker win!
If you are looking for some brief and classic comebacks, here is a post to help you through that:
For the ones who are wondering if this medieval mindset still exists, behold the screengrabs from the comments section of this post.
A meme from a Facebook recipe group
While some cheered for it:
Here is a poem published on the Futuress article that throws light on the very emotion.
Roti’s status in a meal
And the status of a woman in our times
Is there a relation by any chance?
If a Roti is not made round and thin
It does not cook properly,
If a girl does not look ‘beautiful’
She cannot get married to a decent family.
It is always a matter of delicious curries
Roti’s presence is a given,
As she does not stay Anita anymore
Throughout her life, she is to be called Mrs. Sinha.
For a Roti, we knead the wheat into a dough,
Like we teach a girl the norms of womanhood.
A Roti is finally served after it rises over the fire
Like a girl after a certain age is ready for marriage.
Like how we break it with our fingers
Dip it in the curry and chew it under our teeth
So soft that it dissolves in the mouth,
A woman is also made in a way
That she does not raise a voice,
Just keeps on doing what she is supposed to do.
Hey woman, are you a Roti?
Love or Exploitation?
A perfect Roti is like a strict teacher - it demands discipline, attention, and precision. It may not be everyone’s forte and definitely can’t be bucketed as a mandatory skillset for one gender. Women are not sous chefs in the patriarchy's kitchen. It's time to let women decide for themselves what they want to do and who they want to be. And as for Roti, let it be appreciated for the delicious and versatile food that it is, not as a tool to define women's worth.

Whether you're a seasoned chef or a novice in the kitchen, Rotimatic brings the authentic taste and aroma of traditional rotis right to your home, making mealtime a delightful experience for everyone. The question is not whether to own one, the task boils down to which one!
Essentially there are two models available, a standard version and a plus version. The Rotimatic Plus is an upgraded version of the original Rotimatic with several notable differences and improvements. Here are the key distinctions between the two:
Energy Efficiency: The Rotimatic Plus is designed to use less energy compared to the original Rotimatic. It incorporates a new belt drive system that reduces power consumption by approximately 20 watts. This can potentially lead to cost savings on electricity bills.
Noise Reduction: The Rotimatic Plus features a silent press feature that utilizes an advanced low vibration motor during the pressing stage. This innovation significantly reduces noise levels compared to the original Rotimatic while pressing the dough, providing a quieter operation while preparing rotis.
Functionality: The Rotimatic Plus retains all the capabilities and functions of the original Rotimatic along with the enhanced features.
To compare the sound difference at the pressing stage watch the videos at 13:34 (Rotimatic) and 7:12 (Rotimatic Plus) respectively.

Copycats around the world have been trying to reverse engineer the Rotimatic replica for as long as Rotimatic has existed.
There have been a few fully automatic roti makers that suspiciously look and work similar to the Rotimatic, but even after all these years, they’re still not able to beat or even come close to the popularity of the Rotimatic so they have never emerged as a true Rotimatic alternative.
A screenshot from the listing of a copycat roti maker on alibaba.com. Here is a link to the listing. The webpage is definitely worth a visit for cringe's sake 😀
A quick search for keywords like ‘automatic roti maker’, ‘robot roti maker’ etc. On alibaba.com throws up 823 results from Chinese companies that are more or less selling the same machine with different brand names. These so called Rotimatic alternatives are available wholesale for even as low as USD 65!
A screenshot of a search in alibaba.com for the keyword ‘robot roti maker’ reveals 823 similar machines sold by different companies. You can view this search result by clicking here.
Over the years many companies including an upstart that launched in India in 2022 have been selling these machines under their respective brand names all around the world, but let’s first talk briefly about the incredible creation story of the original Rotimatic, a story of the tenacity of Pranoti Nagarkar, the inventor of the Rotimatic.
You can either read the entire blog (trust us, you won't regret it), or if you're looking for something specific you can jump to the section using the index below.
Why Rotimatic is the original roti making robot and will always be?
A short history of Rotimatic copycats
Rotimatic vs copycat by a popular kitchen appliance brand in India
Rotimatic vs other imitations: A comparison
The Rotimatic’s development journey is quite remarkable in itself. Roti making is a complex process and more than 3 billion rotis are made every day around the world and yet there was no solution to make the process any convenient until an Indian origin engineer Pranoti Nagarkar, CEO and CO-Founder of Zimplistic envisioned a dream to tackle this problem. Her dream was not to create a kitchen appliance but create a robot with intelligence who could mimic a human and make perfect rotis each time.
Rotimatic inventors Pranoti and Rishi working in the lab at our Singapore office. You can read more about the story of this invention in our about us page.
Development of the Rotimatic started in 2009. The challenge was huge and Pranoti embraced it with all courage and within 6 months of starting, she created her first prototype ITOR 1. The prototype worked like it was supposed to and that’s how the first Rotimatic roti was made.
One challenge was accomplished; she created a machine within a short span of time which could make a roti but that wasn’t it. It wasn’t fully automatic and not as complex as compared to what Rotimatic is today.

“Invention is a process, and you don’t get there overnight”- Louis Foreman.
This is exactly what Pranoti experienced when she started her endeavor to create Rotimatic. After the 1st prototype in 2009, she came up with another the same year, ITOR 4, then ITOR 6 in 2010 and after 11 such protypes, 15 iterations and 37 patents under her name, in 2013, she finally introduced the world to its first fully automatic, IoT and WI-FI enabled Roti robot – Rotimatic.
This is the ‘wall of hope’ in our Singapore office. It shows the long journey of 8 years and the efforts put into creating the Rotimatic as it is today.
Maybe this is where the other falls apart. Right after Rotimatic was launched, suddenly a lot of other companies followed. The lack of originality wasn’t the issue. The issue was that these so called fully automatic Roti makers never put time and effort into research and development. They made a naïve attempt at replicating Rotimatic with the help of reverse engineering, blatantly copied Roti Matic’s hardware and yet they failed miserably.
Why? Because Rotimatic is more complex than that. The creators created the best hardware without any prior reference. They designed the machine, keeping humans as a reference and mimicking the same judgement and process by replacing it with motors and sensors
Where Rotimatic took 8 years in R&D to innovate and create the best Roti maker in the market, these other companies simply copied the hardware and launched their cheap Chinese manufactured machines into the market, killing the scope of originality and a startup’s dream to revolutionize kitchens with robotics and intelligence.
As soon as the Rotimatic made its first appearance the so called Rotimatic alternatives emerged.
Most of these devices are simply reverse engineered from the original. The manufacturer's attempt to replicate the Rotimatic using cheap materials has inevitably been a failure as none of these models have made it big and most have just disappeared with little trace in the digital world.
In a way, all these so-called Rotimatic alternatives are the same machine that is now sold in bulk on Alibaba.com with the brands changed. Strangely, even the promotion videos of a lot of these are the same.
As you can see, this model has been found in several avatars but essentially it is the same.
If we look at each one of these machines, it’s not very difficult to understand that they look similar to each other. The design and layout are clearly a bad replica of Rotimatic. Whereas Rotimatic has its manufacturing base set in Malaysia and Singapore, all the other replicas are manufactured in China. Which in itself is explanatory of quality of the hardware these machines might have.
Numerous brands exist, including a notable one in India endorsed by a celebrity chef, that have attempted to replicate Rotimatic without comprehending its engineering thoroughly, resulting in poor imitation.
Furthermore, it only highlights the importance of having a thorough understanding of a product's design and functionality before attempting to recreate it. Rotimatic is capable of making multiple recipes and can be upgraded with software updates, which remains an achievable feat across these knock-off devices.
This is the picture from their demos on YouTube. As you can see, there is no 'magic' (wink!) in this roti maker so if you do a Rotimatic vs this magical roti maker, you see the clear winner.

When accepting a new gadget or technology into our lives, what matters is the output. The design, layout, colors are all secondary especially when it comes to food. So, when it comes to all these machines, is the roti quality anywhere close to Rotimatic’s roti? This is another area where they are way off the mark.
When we say that the hardware is exactly the same then you might wonder why the output is so bad? In 2010, prototype ITOR 6, the 3rd prototype out of the eleven of the Rotimatic prototypes, the rotis were tested by a group of people and they gave their feedback as the Rotimatic rotis came out very chewy. It was twelve years ago. An improvement was made and instead of one set of pans another set was added. Since when we make rotis traditionally, we use cold press to retain the moisture in the dough and then we put it on the hot pan for roasting. The idea was to keep one set for pressing (cold pans) and another for roasting (hot pans).
Since research wasn’t a thing for these companies, they have been making the same mistake forever. They use one set of pans for pressing and roasting and hence the output is identified as a bad, chewy and uncooked roti.
You can see that the roti looks dry and looks chewy as their moisture is lost. Some of these aren’t even properly roasted.
Rotimatic is the only roti maker that has an Iot powered software. It uses artificial intelligence to create a better roti each time than the last.
The AI helps with its 32-bit microprocessor that harmoniously orchestrates 10 motors, 15 sensors and 300 parts in parallel. The 10 motors work together based on the data from 15 different sensors, which measure things like temperature, position and the most complex and important metric, that is, consistency. Not only that, you can also connect your Rotimatic to Wi-Fi and download software upgrades and control your Rotimatic from anywhere.
None of the other companies uses this technology to make rotis or have even tried to include the software in their roti makers let alone using artificial intelligence. It also implies that settings in their machines cannot be upgraded and that for any new feature you’ll have to get a new version of their machine.
We are very proud to say that we have a community of 100,000+ Rotimatic owners who consistently share different recipes created by them using our Rotimatic.
Rotimatic was launched with one setting to make just wheat rotis but that has changed over years, thanks to it being an Iot device. A few upgrades have been included mainly Bajra, Jowar, Puris and Pizza bases and many more are yet to come.
Rotimatic is diverse and inclusive and it is highly inconceivable to compare roti quality and diversity of Rotimatic with these other Roti makers. We have already explored the roti quality of normal wheat roti so it’s really unlikely to expect them to be able to create these kinds of recipes with their roti makers.
With its new age technology, the creators also took care of the advanced remote support. IOT enabled the Rotimatic to get data after each session of Roti making and if an issue appears, the agents can log into the machine and send software fixes via the cloud. We have 24/7 live chat service available through our IOS and Android app where customers can live chat with our agents for any issue they face while roti making.
None of the other companies have been able to take care of such an important aspect. There is no app, no website, maybe for a few of these they have a WhatsApp number and that’s it.
When it comes to trust and accountability, these companies have in the past betrayed potential customers. Not so surprisingly, many of these companies also managed to get waiting lists and prebooking’s, yet leave 2022 alone, they never ever rolled their roti makers into the market and some of these never even returned the customer’s hard-earned money which they might have deposited as a prebooking amount.
Many of these so called ‘innovators’ don’t even have a website. They are listed across 3rd party E commerce website or some have their Facebook pages. They leave their dealers' names and numbers but for such a huge investment, is this level of accountability really justifiable?
There is no way for the customers to communicate once they deposit their money for pre booking. One might wonder, even if these companies have entered into the market, the kind of support and post purchase experience they would provide for an investment like this?
In 2013, when Rotimatic was first launched, it immediately took the world by storm with technology that was never seen before in kitchen appliances. The roti from Rotimatic was soft, hygienic, puffed up and fresh each time. It was as good as handmade with all the nutrition of a homemade roti.
The question arises is that does anyone use Rotimatic and is it still in business as of 2023?
As of 2023, we take a lot of pride in the fact that Rotimatic is a part of 100,000+ happy homes with 177million+ rotis made so far across 18 countries and still going strong with our new features and variants rolling in every now and then.
Even after all these years, people love Rotimatic and think of it as a family member. Without this support of our wonderful and extremely strong community of 100,000+ families, we couldn’t have been the number one roti maker.

And is buying it worth the money?
This blog will discuss what makes the Rotimatic relatively more expensive than other everyday household appliances. We will explain how it will ultimately save not just time but also money.

The roti-making process is pretty complicated for a machine. Rotimatic is the world's first roti-making robot. It mixes and makes dough, kneads it, makes a dough ball, flattens & then cooks well puffed and perfectly roasted rotis, one every 90 seconds.
The Rotimatic has 10 motors, 15 intelligent sensors, and a 32-bit processor that makes nearly 300 parts work seamlessly together. And that's just the hardware; Rotimatic is an AI-powered machine that mimics how a human would make rotis.
"Best thing since sliced bread, a roti-making machine"
The Wallstreet Journal
Compared to other relatively expensive kitchen equipment, say, the dishwasher, the scale of Rotimatic's sophistication becomes clear. A typical dishwasher has two motors, a few sensors, and a few functional parts powered by a simple microprocessor.
It is tough to make a robot that makes rotis, but that did not deter Rotimatic CEO and co-founder Pranoti Nagarkar, an engineer. They spent eight years creating and perfecting this fully automatic roti maker. Most of the tech for this kind of machine had to be invented from scratch, which led the inventor to get 37 patents registered.
And we've not even started talking about the brains behind all that fantastic hardware. Rotimatic's AI-powered brain learns and gets better with data from every flatbread made. It is also a truly connected IoT device that, once connected to Wi-Fi, upgrades itself with the latest software updates and can be repaired remotely over the internet.
Over the years, companies in China, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan have tried to reverse engineer the Rotimatic. Their attempts have been unsuccessful because they cannot copy the AI and the ML that makes the Rotimatic so good at making rotis.
The Rotimatic was launched in 2013 and immediately gained praise from users. Zimplistic Pte Ltd, makers of the Rotimatic, had a turnover of USD 20M in the first year of launch. The demand was so high that Rotimatic sold out in early 2015.
"The world's most popular food robot"
The Spoon
Nine years later, in 2022, 160M+ rotis have been made in more than 100,000 homes across 18 countries. Large waiting lists of people are registered worldwide for the Rotimatic launch in their country.
Technology isn't the only thing people appreciate about the Rotimatic. It is an investment, and in return, you eat hot, fresh homemade rotis instead of factory-made frozen rotis, which is good for you and your family.
Compared to buying frozen rotis, Rotimatic helps you end up saving money.
Here is a simple chart calculating the yearly spending on popular frozen roti brands in the US.
Assumption: A family of 4 eats 20 Rotis daily and has roti five days a week.

]]>As a society, we are prone to associate kitchen duties with women, but somehow lack this tendency in associating high-tech kitchenware with the fairer gender. Singapore-based innovator and Founder of the first of its kind kitchen robot, Rotimatic, Pranoti Nagarkar has done her share to change the perception of women in the tech sector. Her company – Zimplistic – has crossed USD 60 million in sales in just two years after the Rotimatic’s launch, and is set to announce a new fundraising round. Although exciting and fulfilling, Pranoti’s passage to break into an unproven market to then become a name to reckon with was not an easy one.
Pranoti’s drive to pursue a career in engineering stemmed from her love for exploring her creative side to invent contraptions. Today, Nagarkar is the founder, co-CEO, and lead designer at Zimplistic. The tech innovator is also a hands-on mother of two.
She is a Mechanical Engineer and considers the prototype for an ironing machine she built in her junior year at college as a warm-up to the 8-years-long challenge to launch Rotimatic that she would commence after graduation. Currently, her professional responsibilities include managing the scaling efforts in the 20 markets Zimplistic operates in.
Pranoti and her husband, Rishi Israni, realized the need for an effective automated flatbread-maker in their initial days in entrepreneurship. According to Pranoti, this stage is one where new business owners need to be careful with budgeting, given that entrepreneurs do not receive a set salary in the early days of running a company. Therefore, eating home-cooked meals not only ensure better health by steering clear of readymade meals, but it is also a great way to save money on restaurants.
However, the task of making rotis is complex and demands labor. It involves mixing the base ingredients – flour, water, and oil – in the correct proportion to knead into a dough of ideal consistency. This dough is then separated into smaller sections and rolled into evenly flattened discs. The last step is to roast these uncooked dough discs on heated pans or directly over a flame. The fact that a food as basic as a roti required so much effort, and despite all the technological advancements made in today’s world the only way to make rotis was by hand seemed unbelievable.
To Pranoti and Rishi, this presented a real-world problem that could be simplified with automation. Thus, they collaborated to bring about Rotimatic, the first kitchen robot to fully automate the process of making a roti, and spent eight years bringing the product to market. The intelligent appliance has numerous moving parts, motors, and electronics, and incorporates sophisticated software, artificial intelligence, and IoT in it as well.
The primary obstacle Pranoti had to overcome was to convince market players of the potential of her product, which proved to a big challenge especially in an unproven market. The technology risks were significant, and skepticism regarding the plausibility of manufacturing a complex machine such as the Rotimatic on a large scale had to be logically quelled without compromising the quality of the product itself.
As a new mother, the responsibilities only piled up for Pranoti who was now balancing her role as an attentive parent as well as a budding businesswoman. Five years later, Pranoti believes balancing work and personal life has become easier given that she now works with a larger team and her products are already out in the market. In 2013, the biggest hurdle to overcome as a founder of a start-up was getting the Rotimatic ready for launch, and overseeing every aspect – from design to manufacturing.
Pranoti Nagarkar has come a long way as an entrepreneur, and she considers her first big achievement in this role to be the successful building of the product itself. The Herculean task took eight years and the results have been worth it for the makers as well as the consumers both. As of now, Rotimatic by Zimplistic is a part of 60,000 homes in 20 countries, the units purchased exclusively through their website. The appliance has been updated to make pizza bases, tortillas, and puris as well to make the product more relevant to broader demography. It is a popular kitchen assistant in the US where the company makes about 60–70% of sales. Other markets where Rotimatic is doing well are in including Australia, the Middle East, Canada, and the United Kingdom. These are the markets that have many Indian expats
Zimplistic is now all set to raise more funds. The aim is to implement the capital to improve the unit economics of the appliance, marketing, as well as to boost sales and distribution.
The tech innovator has her hands full but remains motivated through meditation and sheer grit to keep going even when the going gets tough. It helps her make some of the most crucial decisions to scale her company, and the most important one till now, she maintains, has been to onboard her software engineer husband.

]]>We have all heard of the more or less ubiquitous rice cooker. Most South Asians have now become accustomed to using the numerous variants of the kitchen appliance for cooking one of the most popular stables of their diet – rice. The other favorite food staple of South Asians, roti, however, is still largely made by hand. And although the process of making this flour-water-oil flatbread may seem simple, it is quite the task. For someone who is not an expert in the art of making rotis, the traditional method of doing it is complex enough for them to choose quickly choose ready-made alternatives. Zimplistic’s Rotimatic – a fully-automatic roti maker perfect for domestic use – has emerged as a game-changer for how we are accustomed to preparing the age-old recipe.
Pranoti Nagarkar, Founder and Co-CEO of Zimplistic, recalls her earliest memories of rotis being that of her mother laboring away in the kitchen to bring fresh rotis right off the pan to the table. Similar to most people who shoulder the responsibility of cooking chapatis, phulkas, or rotis, Pranoti recollects her mother too compromised on the time she could have spent with her family at the dinner table. Sadly, without investing adequate time and attention, the effort put into yielding soft and fluffy rotis goes to naught.
To understand this better, one has to consider the actions that go into making a roti. The dry and wet ingredients are carefully measured out in the correct proportion of the mix. The water added should preferably be of a certain temperature (warm) to facilitate kneading of the dough to the ideal consistency. After a period of rest, this dough is then evenly flattened into thin discs which are then roasted in a pan or directly over a flame. When cooking for an average of four people, the time taken for rotis could be well over half an hour. Rotimatic notably compresses this time down to a few minutes using automation.
Pranoti experienced the struggle of making rotis daily first-hand and decided it was about time the roti-making process got a technological update. Thus, the combined efforts of Pranoti and Rishi came about Zimplistic’s Rotimatic that recreates all the steps. Beyond the act of pouring flour, water, and oil into their designated compartments in the machine and pushing a few buttons, Rotimatic does not require any further user intervention.
Rotimatic is a high-tech robot with its 10 motors, 15 sensors, and 200 moving parts controlled by a 32-bit microprocessor. Its highlights though are the AI and IoT features that allow it to be paired with iOS or Android applications. Synced devices such as smartphones enable users to operate it through the installed Rotimatic app from afar. The automatic roti maker also automatically downloads updates for its software as and when those are released in the cloud. Rotimatic thus evolves and expands its gamut of functions and ability to troubleshoot.
Time is money, and any means that affords us more of it has a thick chance of winning the hearts of people. Rotimatic does exactly this and more. The device shrinks the time taken to make rotis by the traditional method which is rarely less than 30 minutes at least to a matter of a few minutes. It takes about eight minutes to warm up and then continues to give warm, fluffy, fresh flatbread in less than two minutes a unit.
Rotimatic uses its sensors to measure and dispense the exact amount of ingredients required in the dough mix and kneads it to the ideal consistency. The dough is then moved by a mechanical arm to another part of the appliance where it is evenly flattened into a disc and then roasted on heating plates. A steaming golden-brown roti is slid out on a tray at the front bottom of the Rotimatic at the end of the process. One can specify the oil content, thickness of the flatbread, level of roasting, and the number of rotis to be made in a batch. Every roti made in a batch has consistent quality.
The other factor that is a hit with users is the ease of maintenance of the appliance. It is very simple to clean, and given its IoT feature, it does not have to be carried to a service station any time there is an issue with its performance.
As our lives continue to get more hectic we will continue to look for ways to economize the time we spend on each task. An appliance like Rotimatic is a boon for professionals and those who wish to do more with their time and explore their interests. Kitchen robotics is the next big thing and Zimplistic’s Rotimatic has strengthened the foundation for new-age innovations to build on.

]]>Rotis are ubiquitous to most South Asian households, so much so that certain families refer to meals by just that single term. You can frequently hear mothers telling their children to have their “roti” before going to bed or ask “roti khaya kya?” to know if someone has had their meal. The appeal of this simple flour-and-water flatbread lies in its simplicity and adaptability – it compliments almost every curry popularly consumed. Take the flatbread to a different cuisine and call it a tortilla or pizza base, you’ll have another diverse range of delicious dishes to enjoy. Zimplistic’s Rotimatic (priced at $999) has thus found favor among more than just one demography by revolutionizing how unleavened flatbreads are made.
Mechanical engineer Pranoti Nagarkar, along with her husband, software engineer Rishi Israni has introduced a pioneering automatic roti-maker, Rotimatic. The high-tech appliance whose prototype debuted in 2008 has been designed to economize time and effort put into making rotis and other flatbreads. It can make puris, pizza bases, and tortillas thus far, and is set to lengthen this list with future upgrades.
The kitchen robot automates and replicates the traditional method in which rotis are made – manually. This involves measuring out the correct proportion of flour, water, and oil for the dough which is kneaded to the ideal consistency. Honestly, this is quite difficult to achieve. Inevitably, the quality of the rotis one makes varies every single time unless the person making it is a thoroughly practiced expert. Additionally, there are the steps of diving the dough into smaller, equal sections for rolling into discs of even thickness that are, in its simplest form, roasted in an unoiled skillet or directly over a flame.
Rotimatic compresses the entire process which would take about half an hour to an hour (depending on the size and appetite of the family) to a matter of a few minutes with minimal assistance from the user.
The appliance measuring 40 x 40 centimeters and weighing 20 kilograms has a sleek futuristic design that comfortably fits on any kitchen counter. Its front façade has flip-open doors, and it comes with three transparent containers for the ingredients which are visible on the top. Turn it around and you’ll find the connector for the power cable and a USB port for maintenance.
Reviews of Rotimatic highlight its sophisticated technological features that facilitate the efficient and unique functions of the robot. These are listed below:
Rotimatic uses 10 motors, 15 sensors, and 200 moving parts which are controlled by a 32-bit microprocessor to make soft fresh rotis. The sensors are used to measure and dispense the correct proportion of dry and wet ingredients for the dough. A mechanical arm moves the dough ball to another compartment within the appliance to be flattened into discs of even thickness and then transferred on to heating plates to be roasted. Since a user can pre-set the oil content, the thickness of the rotis and the level of roasting, the quality of the rotis in each batch is consistent. One can even play around with the flavors of the roti and recreate some of the recipes provided in the Rotimatic app.
Zimplistic’s Rotimatic is aimed at the demography that faces a challenge in striking a balance between kitchen duties and professional life. The appliance is easy to operate and maintain and ensures its users nutritious and fresh flatbreads for every meal. The Rotimatic is poised to become a standard part of kitchens with its presence now in most of the economically advanced countries, including –the US, UK, the Gulf countries, Singapore, across Europe, and Australia.

]]>I was two semesters smarter, and eight kilos heavier when I flew back to my parents’ in Mumbai for a break in 2014. More than me it was my mother who freaked out over the latter development, mainly because she is diabetic and well aware of the side effects of being overweight. I had to promise to swap pasta and bread with low-calorie whole-wheat rotis, knowing well I wouldn’t follow through because making rotis is a tedious job and I had a full-time management course, and a part-time job to balance. Four years later and with a schedule still as hectic, Rotimatic has brought back the goodness of fresh home-made rotis back into my regular diet.
Let’s talk about what makes this amazing innovation one of the best of our time!
Electronic roti-makers have been around for a while, best recognized by its compact size and heating paddles. When using these, a user has to mix and knead the dough to the desired consistency, divide the dough into smaller portions and place it at the specified position on the paddle and press it down. The labor saved is thus just the part of rolling the dough and roasting it. Compared to this, Rotimatic is an all different ballgame.
Using 15 sensors, 10 motors, and 300 moving parts, Rotimatic replicates all the steps of making a roti in the traditional procedure – from measuring the amount of ingredients to be added, to kneading the dough, separating it into smaller parts, rolling them into perfectly circular discs, and roasting the dough till a puffed golden-brown. User intervention stops at pouring the three ingredients – flour, water, and oil – into their respective compartments in the machine, and pressing a few buttons.
This automatic roti-maker is packed with sophisticated technological features, and thankfully we are familiar with most of them owing to our increasing dependence on cutting-edge gadgets. Let’s take a look at them in details below:
Rotimatic has to be the most exciting and out of the box kitchen appliance I have ever used, all the more in the uniqueness of its concept. It is surprising that it took so long for someone to think up a device that could automate the preparation of a food as basic as a roti! Here are some of the observations I made of the performance of this automatic roti-maker. I’ll start with the pros:
Cons would include:
Rotimatic – now available in the US, Singapore, and Australia, among other countries – is a kitchen robot dedicated to giving you the best machine-made flatbreads. The method used is highly efficient and quick and does not compromise on the nutrition and freshness factors of the food made. Users can play around with flavors and colors of the rotis, recreate interesting recipes, and yet save enormous lengths of time while doing so.
Transform your food with Rotimatic - tailor your meal according to your needs & indulge in low-calorie, healthy rotis for a nourishing lifestyle!

]]>If you’ve been to any Indian restaurant, you’ve surely noticed an entire section of the menu dedicated to rotis, which is what unleavened flatbread is called in India. It’s quite impossible, therefore, to imagine any curry or kebab, be it plant-based or meat-based, to be enjoyed without either phulkas, naans, tandoori rotis, or puris. This dietary staple, sadly, is one difficult task to get just right, especially by unpractised hands, and all the more in a time crunch. This is where Zimplistic’s Rotimatic has stepped in and stolen the show by automating the entire process of making rotis with almost zero margins of error. To the billion people in the world consuming rotis as a fundamental part of their daily meals, this is a massive help.
Traditionally, rotis are made by hand. It involves mixing the base ingredients (flour, water, and oil) in a specific ratio, kneading it to a particular consistency, allowing it to stand for some time before it is rolled and flattened into even discs. These raw discs of dough are then roasted directly on a flame/unoiled skillet or fried in oil. Either way, it is an inconvenience requiring an extensive investment of time, labor, and being exposed to a source of heat.
Rotimatic self-operates to replicate the entire stated process by implementing state-of-the-art technological features such as AI and IoT. Once you’ve filled the three containers with flour, water, and oil, and pressed a few buttons in the settings display screen, you can sit back, relax, and let the robot do the hard work. In a matter of minutes, fluffy warm flatbreads are ready to be enjoyed, with the maximum number of rotis in a batch going up to twenty.
Given that the appliance has been designed by a mechanical engineer and software engineer duo – Pranoti Nagarkar and Rishi Israni – it is rife with a lengthy catalog of hardware and software. The nearly 16×16 inches robot, small enough to fit on a countertop, houses 300 distinct parts. These include 10 motors that correspond to the data collected from 15 sensors. Together, these components modulate the proportion of ingredients that go into the dough, transfer food content from one part of the machine to the other for the various stages of preparation, the pressure applied to flatten the dough into discs, and the temperature at which it is cooked.
The multiple aspects to making the perfect roti exist because Rotimatic gives its users the facility to choose certain parameters such as the brand of flour for use, oil content, the thickness of the rotis, and the heat at which they will be cooked. What results is a batch of delicious flatbreads that have consistent quality.
Gizmodo – a design, technology, science and science fiction website with a massive following – recently reviewed Rotimatic and were more than impressed with it. Described as “one of the smartest kitchen appliances around” in the review, it points out how the popularity of Rotimatic’s popularity has continued to soar despite its $600 price tag. The reason behind this phenomenon is the years of development and eight new patents that went into the robot before it hit the market. The product sold out within the first of opening its pre-sale orders.
Rotimatic does not cease to impress just at making perfect rotis but captivates with the variety of flatbreads one can make using it. Tortilla, pizza bases, and puris are some other flatbreads that can be made using it. Play around with flavors, as long as they come in a powdered form. Pick the gluten-free flour option if that is how you like your carb. The machine is just as easy to clean and maintain as well, given that the developers at Rotimatic can troubleshoot online by connecting to the robot via IoT and WiFi. The automatic roti-maker has immense appeal to the new generation and resonates with the tech-assisted lifestyle they are accustomed to. The Rotimatic is definitely first of a range of intelligent kitchen products we will soon see everywhere.

The post Rotimatic Review – An Incredible Appliance That Saves Time, Energy, And Power appeared first on Rotimatic.
]]>This is a story with a twist. Recently, my friend threw a quinceanera party for her daughter and I was asked to help organize it. The guest list had eighty names, and my friend was hell-bent on not hiring a caterer. Apart from rice and beans, green salad, guacamole, and tamales, a big part of the menu were tortillas and nachos. Now, making tortillas and nachos at home is tedious and therefore one can guess my surprise when a process that normally takes hours was completed in a small fraction of the time by Rotimatic – the first fully automatic robot designed to, well, make rotis.
Honestly, this was the first time I used a kitchen appliance this futuristic and have been spellbound by it ever since. Zimplistic – the company that makes Rotimatic – came out with the prototype of the robot in 2009. After years of further research and several patents by founders Pranoti Nagarkar and Rishi Israni, Rotimatic is now recognized as the first fully-automatic roti maker created for use in the domestic kitchen available in international markets. The appliance is a massive hit with over 60,000 units already sold the world over and has crossed USD 60 million in sales in just two years after the Rotimatic’s launch. This can be attributed to its global appeal – not only does it make delicious and fresh rotis, but it also makes puris as well, and flatbreads such as pizza base ad tortilla, as seen in cuisines other than Indian.
The traditional method of making a roti takes about half an hour, and can stretch more depending on the number of rotis bring made. The process involves kneading dough from a mix of dry and wet ingredients which are added in a specific proportion. Paying attention to the proportion here is important because human error leaves open scope for the consistency of the dough to differ each time, affecting the quality of the flatbreads. The dough ball is divided into smaller segments, flattened into even discs and then roasted on an unoiled skillet or directly over a flame for a perfect cook time.
Rotimatic takes less than ten minutes to warm up and then replicates the entire process in a matter of 90 seconds. But does this mean you’ll have zero control over how your roti turns? Absolutely not! A user can select from a provided range of flours, choose the number of rotis to be made in a batch, its oil content, thickness, flavors to add if any, and the level of roasting. Once these parameters are set, Rotimatic proceeds to make flatbreads of identical quality every time until the settings are changed. The amount of time it frees for the user, especially on a hectic day is remarkable!
Add to this its ease of maintenance. The kneader and the plate where Rotimatic rolls the dough balls can be taken out without any hassle and can be rinsed off or put in a dishwasher. The ingredient-holders are just as easy to clean. Rotimatic comes with cleaning accessories such as brushes as well. And since Rotimatic is IoT and AI-enabled, issues in its performance can be fixed from a remote location as well and won’t require to be carried to any service station. This is a relief considering the 39-pound weight of the robot.
One needs to consider the gamut of sophisticated technological features Rotimatic is equipped with and their range of functions to fully appreciate the comparatively small magnitude of electricity it consumes to run them. Rotimatic is AI and IoT-enabled can share data between synced smart devices through Wi-Fi, and upgrades automatically.
A 32-bit microprocessor controls the 10 motors, 15 sensors, and 200 moving parts of Rotimatic to accurately measure and dispense flour, water, and oil for the dough, flatten it to the exact thickness specified, and roast it on heating plates till it puffs. The finished product slides out onto a tray attached to the front of the appliance.
Surprisingly, the power consumption of Rotimatic is not much different from that of a high-volume microwave oven. It draws in the ~1500W range to warm up the required components and water to make 10 Rotis, with the least thickness and 3/4 roast level. The power consumption dips post this stage, rising again during the production of individual flatbreads. In any case, the power consumed is between 1.6kW – 1.8kW. The USA and Canada model has 110V voltage, and the UK, Singapore model, 220V.
The automatic roti-maker is a blessing for times when you simply do not have the time or inclination to make fresh rotis, puris, tortillas, or pizza bases, but do not wish to each frozen or restaurant-bought alternatives either. Rotimatic is already a buzzword among the younger crowd of professionals and homemakers and is catching on in the older circles as well for the ease it brings to an essential kitchen chore. Domestic spaces are steadily infusing AI into its design, and the Rotimatic is just a glimpse of what an intelligent kitchen would comprise.

The post Is It Possible To Reverse The Phenomenon Of Unpaid Labour By Women? appeared first on Rotimatic.
]]>Memories from childhood, for most of us, are often built around the wholesome meals our families would come together to enjoy. Be it special occasions or the daily breakfast, these delectable dishes were primarily prepared by our mothers or grandmothers. Certain recipes are even passed down through generations and are identifiable by the label “grandma’s special casserole” or something similar. Although we relish the spread, given a closer look the biased woven into this allocation of responsibility is clear – kitchen duties are traditionally feminized. This labour, however, goes unrecognized, and, therefore, unpaid. We agree that change is coming, albeit at snail pace through government policies and technological innovations such as the advent of smart kitchens, a discussion on the current state of affairs is important.
That fundamental characteristic of unpaid care work is that it is not directly remunerated. Ideally, any work of this nature should be included in the calculation of GDP. For instance, calculations that were done but feminist economists and statisticians in Argentina give is a figure of 7% of GDP, and in a less developed country like Tanzania, it was seen to be an even higher figure, about 63%. If the unpaid care work done in Switzerland were to be valued and added to the GDP, it would be almost as big as the banking and insurance industry of the wealthy European nation. The problem peaks in India, a country of 1.3 billion people, where the work contributed by 49% of the population goes unaccounted for, giving a hard blow to the GDP. Women here dedicate about 352 minutes into domestic work every day – a number comparatively massive to the 51.8 put in by men.
From a utilitarian point of view, domestic work doesn’t generate products and services for market consumption. Citing this logic, economists sideline a large chunk of the service done by women and exclude it from the GDP and employment metrics in general. Despite this, the significance of unpaid care, which can be described as the work done to create an environment conducive to building up a person’s capabilities, is immense remains unaltered.
“While much of this imbalance is explained by the discrepancy in care-giving and unpaid work, institutional and policy inertia, outdated organizational structures and discrimination, one additional explanatory factor is the skills differentials in the types of degrees women and men seek out in their education,” says the World Economic Forum (WEF).
First of all, such a move would boost the GDP of a country. Let’s take the case of India for example. According to a report released by the International Monetary Fund, the GDP of the country could grow by 27% if women’s participation in the economy were to be raised to that of men.
Secondly, it would redefine how we currently understand labor. The exchange rate of any service on the market would not be the only determinant of the value of labor which should ideally include the effort invested in maintaining unity and functionality of families and communities.
Lastly, viewing domestic work such as kitchen duties as accountable labor will entitle women to at least some extent of parity where time and energy are concerned. Empowerment would be the final goal.
Data shows that almost 75% of all unpaid care work is carried out by women and girls. This unequal distribution between men and women penalizes women by taking away opportunities of pursuing a full-time job from them. A decent wage, being able to accumulate a pension and access to the benefits that come with formal sector employment is thus out of their reach.
Redistributing care is critical and it involves rethinking and redoing our social relationships. States can make progress by ensuring good quality public services, and child care services. Also, you have to change your expectations and social norms so that women and men can share those responsibilities more equally.
Just like dedicated policies introduced by governments, the private sector is also doing its bit to increase the participation of men in executing household chores such as cooking. The concept of intelligent kitchens that incorporate automated appliances is catching on with the promise of making kitchen work less cumbersome. Robots are simplifying cooking methods down to the fundamental food stable. Zimplistic, for example, has introduced Rotimatic, a compact robot that saves time and effort taken to make simple flour and water flatbreads, an accompaniment consumed by millions regularly. It market success speaks a lot about the demand for electronics that can make life easier and render free time more accessible to pursue other interests.
So with more laws and high-tech solutions, we can increase the social expectation that more can be done to redistribute the work and not just say this is a private matter for families to deal with.

]]>Rotimatic’s pioneering design has made it an indispensable appliance that brings fresh, homemade food to children, curbing the need to consume easily-available junk food.
The importance of bringing back the norm of growing up on a diet of healthy food is supreme in the present day. Because of the time crunch faced by parents, children bear the brunt of consuming fast-food or food items with a high content of preservatives in more than one meal a day. The result as we all can see is the increased incidence of obesity, diabetes, and other health conditions in our young. Luckily, the advent of high-tech machines in kitchens is helping turn things around, with pioneering inventions like Rotimatic catching the attention of leading social activists.
Recently, the founder of Rotimatic, Pranoti Nagarkar had an opportunity to meet with the former First Lady of the USA and best-selling author and activist, Michelle Obama, with the pretext of discussing healthcare. Obama is undoubtedly one of the most prominent faces of the movement to improve access to organic and nutrition-rich meals to school children. She led a public health campaign, “Let’s Move!” to promote a healthy lifestyle in children, aiming to lower childhood obesity to 5% by 2030.
Michelle Obama announced the campaign in 2010, and together with the presidential memorandum signed by President Obama called the Task Force on Childhood Obesity, actively worked toward the following goals:
Rotimatic resonates with the ideologies promoted by Michelle, primarily by aiding to replace fast-food with enriching and wholesome homemade meals. The world’s first fully automated rotimaker has compressed a task that would traditionally take about an hour to just a few minutes. Consuming home-cooked flatbreads had become a luxury, and therefore, rare, for urban families who were habitually picking frozen flatbreads or takeaways from restaurants.
Rotimatic relies on AI and IoT to produce fresh, soft, and delicious flour-and-water flatbreads with consistent quality. A 32-bit microprocessor controls and synergizes the functions of 10 motors, 15 sensors, and 200 moving parts within the robot’s 40 x 40-centimeter body. Ingredients are measured, dispense, kneaded into a dough, flattened, and roasted in under 90 seconds – all without human interference. The user can set the number of rotis in a batch, their oil content, thickness, and level of roasting.
In her best-seller, Becoming (2018), Michelle talks about how her mother ingrained the trait of being responsible for one’s own well-being. She stuck to the lesson and made an example of this principle by nurturing a garden at the white house during her tenure as the First Lady to encourage the consumption of organically grown produce.
Similarly, Rotimatic has empowered a demographic made of students, professionals, and those who are not very adept at kitchen duties to be able to make their own flatbreads – be it rotis, tortillas, puris, or pizza-base. Since the appliance can be connected to wifi, tracked using the Rotimatic app, and troubleshooting can be done directly from the cloud.
Take a look at the menu of your favorite deli and you’re bound to find an array of bread-based bites and baked confectionaries. A majority of them will have white bread – our go-to sandwich bread – or be made of white flour. This staple of childhood lunches is low in fiber and has a lot of preservatives that are only useful for elongating their shelf life and texture. It contains just the white endosperm, which is primarily starch and is completely bereft of the bran and germ of the wheat grain. Its nutritional value is thus very poor.
Packaged tortillas and pitas are also mostly full of preservatives and texture modifiers that have zero nutritional value. Additionally, these have high gluten content which is detrimental to gut health.
However, the whole-wheat versions of these can be made easily and in a fraction of the time using Rotimatic. Unleavened flatbread such as rotis, puris, tortillas, pizza bases, and pita made of whole wheat have the following health benefits:
The kitchen robot is an essential tool that brings-in homemade food and therefore nutrition on our table without hassle and labor. Its necessity in this age of technology and grueling work culture is evident in its widespread acceptance across the globe, with the United States making up one of its biggest markets. The brand has already over 70 million units in the first couple of years since it hit the market and has a waiting list of customers keen on making it a part of their lifestyle. Since its inception, Rotimatic has stood for homemade goodness and nutrition, and its visibility has deservedly gotten a boost with being recognized by one of the best-known icons in the nutrition space.

]]>The post The Rotimatic-Rose Lady – Rashmi Kulkarni Is Quite The Celebrity Chef In the Rotimatic Family! appeared first on Rotimatic.
]]>The Doha-based Rotimatic user has come under the limelight in the Rotimatic community with her culinary creative masterpieces – all made of rotis churned out by Zimplistic’s kitchen robot.
While grown-ups can write an essay on the health benefits of home-made rudimental flour-and-water rotis, the food staple of most cuisines struggles to impress the taste buds of children. Luckily, a mother of two delightful young daughters, Rashmi Kulkarni has mastered the art of holding the loyalty of her children toward the simple unleavened flatbread. How? With Zimplistic’s Rotimatic as her reliable kitchen assistant, she has gone all-out to express her creative side by putting together attention-grabbing, yummy yet healthy dishes. As for the rest of us, we are glad that the home chef has been sharing her innovations on our Facebook page.
Rashmi’s Rotimatic-story has quite an unconventional beginning. It was first introduced to her by her husband, who in turn has learned of the fully-automatic roti maker from a video shared with him on social media way back in 2014. Impressed by the technological innovation behind the futuristic appliance, he highlights how the automation of a process that goes back thousands of years can change family dynamics. “I’ve seen a lot of women in my family,” he remarks, “be it my mother or my sister, making rotis and serving it fresh off the tawa. Unfortunately, it requires a lot of effort and at times can be quite a thankless job. It was important to me to create a situation where my entire family could sit together and just enjoy the meal.”
His take on Rotimatic’s role to enable a family to spend more quality time as a unit resonates with the vision of the inventors of the appliance, Pranoti Nagarkar and Rishi Israni. After all, the driving force behind the machine was to reduce the time and labor one invested in kitchen duties, which includes cooking as well as cleaning up. But was taking the leap of faith in purchasing a comparatively expensive device come easily to Rashmi? Definitely not. “There were hardly any reviews so we didn’t know what to expect, but we were fascinated by the prospect of having a machine that could churn out rotis so quickly without any effort and needed minimal cleaning of its parts. Honestly, it seemed to be too good to be true, but we were curious enough to be on a one-and-a-half-year waiting list to try out the appliance ourselves.” Now, after around two years of having Rotimatic as a significant part of her kitchen (since March 2017), Rashmi turns to it at least two times in a day for batches of puffed, mouth-watering rotis.
Kulkarni, however, didn’t stop at that. Although she initially used it to exclusively make rotis because the updates for puri, pizza base, and bajra were introduced more recently, she recognized the scope it had opened up. Soon, the home-chef caught on to the excitement Rotimatic had sparked in its users and took to trying out wraps, sandwiches, parathas, and other variations by adding mouth-watering fillings. “It is easy to diversify versions of rotis now because every roti rolled out by Rotimatic puffs which simplify the process of adding stuffing into it. We switch it to tempting toppings when we make pizza-bases from the device which our daughters absolutely love!”
Similar to most of us dealing with a hectic schedule, Rashmi’s family were frequent consumers of restaurant food. “When we first started to use Rotimatic, we used to eat at restaurants at last twice a week. The quality of rotis from Rotimatic surprised us and incorporating it into our daily meals was a breeze. As a consequence, our diet has changed for the better. We noticed that we had completely stopped eating out in the past 3 months. The best part was that none of us, not even the kids, had any complaints about switching to home-made meals. Everything else that we made to go with the rotis was also home-made and healthy.”
Rashmi’s husband, who by now had emerged as the surprise Rotimatic-fan in the conversation, is particularly content with the time the smart appliance has economized. He interjects, “Rotimatic has given Rashmi that much extra time to sleep in in the morning. Our kids’ school bus comes at around 6:30 am in the morning and Rashmi would have to wake up at around 5 am to prepare their lunch. Now that has become a matter of minutes. Throw in some mashed potatoes for alu paratha or sliced boiled eggs with spring onions and a little seasoning and you are good to go! The economizing of time is a huge bonus for us.”
Rashmi comes up with new recipes every month that she posts on the Rotimatic Facebook page, but one seems to stand out among the rest. A feat of random culinary ideation, the Rotimatic-rose as it is called is a take on rotis that is as delicious as it is visually appealing. So what’s the story behind it? Rashmi opens up, “My children are always asking me what I’d be cooking for them. They always expect me to come up with something new. I already had the candied roses in my house. All I had to do was stuff that into the dough, fold them into the shape of the flowers and stain the petals with diluted beetroot juice. I was surprised that it all came together so quickly. It was just an idea in my mind but my kids loved it. They were long gone before I could take any pictures!”
Once a resident of Singapore, Rashmi is now based in Qatar. Of the things she deemed she simply couldn’t do without in her new home is Rotimatic. “We wanted to take Rotimatic wherever we were because it is an integral part of our family. There was no way we could leave back in Singapore.”
The final verdict, however, came from her 4 yr old younger daughter. When asked if she liked stuffed-rotis, she promptly replied “No!” Normalcy was restored when her mother clarified with a laugh that the child didn’t even know what a “stuffed-roti” was. “Do you like paneer parathas and egg rotis?” proved to be a better question. “Yes!” replied she. Given Rashmi’s prowess, we’ll accept her review as an unbiased one.
]]>The post Rotimatic Crosses Another Benchmark With 70 Million Delicious Rotis! appeared first on Rotimatic.
]]>This is an age when life and its mounting responsibilities and expectations has bred a generation that sustains on fast food and take-aways. Bringing back a preference for home-made fresh food, which normally brings with it the dread of long hours of labor in the kitchen, would be a challenge most would shy away from. Keeping this in mind, the fact that Rotimatic has brought over 70 million rotis to the dinner table of its expanding customer-base is surely an achievement for Zimplistic to celebrate!
Speak with the various users now more than just happy with their high-tech kitchen assistant and you’ll know Rotimatic has lived up to its promise of bringing families together. Be it the new-age working women, homemakers with managing not only their own chores but also that of their children and husband, or college students who had been too busy with academics to dedicate time to prepare fresh food – everyone is gushing about how the kitchen robot has freed up time in their daily lives. Spending time with those who we hold dear is more of a reality now, and this helps nurture our most important bonds we so value yet often neglect.
Measuring out flour, water, and oil, kneading the mixture into dough of optimum consistency, and rolling them into discs of even thickness and size were all done manually. The task didn’t stop there, though. Next came roasting it on a skillet that was just hot enough to not burn through the thin discs, or directly over a flame. This step required one to stand near a heat source and flip the roti just at the right time to ensure it puffed. Given the number of rotis one had to make, the task could take about an hour. Of course, there was always scope of human error that would make it difficult to ensure that every roti turned out to be of the same quality.
Engineers Pranoti Nagarkar and Rishi Israni changed that with their high-tech innovation which has automated every step mentioned above. Incorporating a 32-bit microprocessor, AI, IoT, 10 motors, 15 sensors, and 300 moving parts, the sleek appliance compact enough to fit atop a counter gives fresh and delicious rotis, one per 90 seconds. A user can select the flour, oil content, number of rotis in a batch, its thickness and level of roasting. Each flatbread is invariable identical in its quality and serves the same goodness consistently.
Rotimatic obviously did not become a talking point overnight. Pranoti and Rishi took a leap of faith and dedicated their time and effort entirely to bringing their idea to shape. Its first prototype was introduced in 2009, and has gone through 37 patents and is backed by 8 years of research and development. It sold over 60,000 units in just two years after its launch and crossed USD 60 million in sales. The number has shot up even more after subsequent software upgrades enabled it to make high quality pizza-bases, tortillas, and puris. The choice of flour too has expanded with users now given the option of selecting gluten-free variety as well. Once available only in Singapore, Rotimatic now has happy customers in USA, UK, New Zealand, Australia, UAE, and Qatar as well.
Automation of traditional cooking methods has made consuming fresh and healthy food a reality for many who had almost nearly given it up for frozen alternatives. With the quick availability of flatbreads, users are experimenting with different flavors and diversifying our experience of relishing homemade food. Rotimatic users have successfully made Rotimatic rotis and other flatbread variants an integral part of their daily diet which has led to a whole new transformation in their lifestyle anchoring them to eat more healthy. Given the support it has received from the world over, Team Rotimatic is already gearing up to touch the 100 million milestone in the coming year and bring the dream of a fully intelligent kitchen that much closer.

The post Rotimatic Sales Dominate the Market with 40000 Units Off the Shelf appeared first on Rotimatic.
]]>The idea of having robots at home to help out with domestic chores is no longer a thing of science fiction. You can see variants of it already in use and rising. This year happens to be especially noteworthy for its marked rise in demand for domestic robots, and understandably so, give the ever-intensifying schedules of individuals. It is, therefore, no wonder that Rotimatic, being a high-performing appliance, is selling like hotcakes.
The fully automatic roti-maker is the product of years of research and several patents by innovator team Pranoti Nagarkar and Rishi Israni. The duo has the vision to be instrumental in the realization of intelligent kitchens and Rotimatic is a significant step towards that goal. The countertop robot has automated one of the most basic food items that are an indispensable part of most cuisines around the world – the flatbread. Call it roti, tortilla, pizza base, pita, flatbreads have a global presence.
However, unless one is extremely well-practiced in the art of making flatbread, cooking one from scratch is a tedious and time-consuming ordeal. In the age we are living in, taking time out from our busy schedules to hand-make rotis is something we opt out of, often choosing unhealthy alternatives such as frozen rotis or takeaways from restaurants. In such an environment, Rotimatic is a lifesaver. It economizes time and effort by automating the multi-layered process of making flatbreads and does not compromise with nutrition either.
Domestic robots are proliferating at a rapid pace and The Boston Consulting Group expects expenditure on them to reach $87 billion by 2025. Rotimatic by Zimplistic, priced at $999, is catching up to popular players such as Miso Robotics’ Flippy in the kitchen robotics space. Julia, a work-in-progress by Nymble Labs, will be a machine intelligent enough to recreate a select list of recipes according to the personal taste preferences of the user.
Adding to the list of AI-based robot chefs that can mimic human behavior in assisting in cooking food is Mechanical Chef. It is proficient in preparing over 20 Indian dishes. Suzumo’s sushi robots have automated the process of putting together sushi and are very popular. The UK-based Moley’s robotic kitchen takes it a step further by boasting of the capability to recreate recipes from celebrity chefs such as Thomas Keller and Gordon Ramsay.
The high Rotimatic sales can be attributed to its uniqueness. It is the only fully automated, AI and IoT-enabled roti-maker made for domestic use in existence. It can be paired with iOS or Android applications so that users may operate from synced devices as well through the Rotimatic app. The IoT feature also enables the automatic download of updated versions of the Rotimatic software.
Rotimatic utilizes the 32-bit microprocessor-controlled 10 motors, 15 sensors, and 200 moving parts to give you fresh rotis in under two minutes. The robotic elements of the machine dispense measured quantities of flour, water, and oil in the dough mix. This dough is kneaded to an ideal consistency by the internal mechanism of the appliance to form perfect discs for roasting into puffed up golden brown rotis. Each stage is carried out in dedicated parts within the unit.
Users can choose the number of rotis that Rotimatic will prepare in a batch (the maximum being 20), the amount of oil to be added to the dough, the thickness of the roti, and the level of roasting. The creators of Rotimatic paid a lot of attention to the consistency of quality of the flatbreads made in the appliance, and each roti in a batch is satisfactorily is exactly the same.
The promise to minimize user intervention when employed has struck a chord with homemakers and professionals accustomed to a convenience economy. Rotimatic, which is now available in the US, UK, the Gulf countries, Singapore, across Europe, and Australia, has sold over 40000 units, generating about $40 million. The company brought its total funding to $48.5 million by raising $30 million earlier this year.
Advanced technology is making its way into every sphere of our lives and domestic kitchens is an area to look out for interesting innovations in. Planning meals per our individual health needs and taste preferences with minimal labor are the ultimate goal of futuristic kitchens.
]]>The post Amazon CTO Meets The Makers Of Rotimatic – The New Age Kitchen Robot appeared first on Rotimatic.
]]>Tech-centric shows are a great way to stay up to date about what’s new in the tech world, the “Now Go Build with Werner Vogels” series on Amazon is one that has become a raging hit. In each episode, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels interviews innovators and gives an insight into the dynamic and rapidly evolving world of AI and cloud computing.
A recent episode of the show focused on Singapore-based husband and wife team of entrepreneur/tech expert and mechanical engineer, Rishi Israni and Pranoti Nagarkar – the inventors of Rotimatic. The kitchen robot is poised to change the way the world cooks one of its oldest recipes – the simple flour-and-water flatbread.
It is no wonder that Vogels has chosen to explore the story of Rotimatic. The AI and IoT-enabled appliance are the only one of its kind and leagues ahead of its predecessors in the category of electronic flatbread or roti-makers. It is an antithesis to the notion that automation is eroding traditions since what it does is it implements technology to hold on to norms most dear to us.
What Pranoti and Rishi have come up with is an efficient system to replicate the process of making a roti (and other forms of flatbread such as tortillas and pizza base) in a completely self-governed machine. It aims to address issues that compromise our standard of living, be it is managing a work-life balance or health. As pointed out by Israni, “seventy percent of illnesses are lifestyle disease-related, and they are primarily related to the type of food you consume” and “one-third of the world’s food is wasted”. Rotimatic is the duo’s first step toward realizing their vision of a fully intelligent kitchen that will ensure a healthy diet for its users and minimize wastage of food at the same time.
Rotimatic is the amalgamation of the necessity to optimize time and expert knowledge in cutting-edge technology. Its prototype was first introduced in 2009 by Zimplistic. The home food robot has machine learning built into it, can connect with the wifi and sync with other smart devices, troubleshoot when needed, and update its software. The Rotimatic’s corresponding app will allow it to be operated from remote locations as well.
The software makes it possible to track the number of rotis made using Rotimatic across the globe, customer satisfaction, and machine errors. This information helps the company prioritize issues that need to be addressed and fixed first.
Rotimatic collects relevant data from every roti it makes. This includes information concerning the content and quality of the food being prepared by the appliance. Users are also urged to rate the user experience on the display screen of the robot at the end of every cycle to help upgrade the system. Rotimatic gives a data-driven, data-backed understanding of the operations of the machine.
However, its transition from a hardware-only device to incorporating a major software component was not an overnight one. Years of research following the realization of how complicated servicing the product would be led to implementing AWS and IoT into the Rotimatic design. The benefits of this upgrade have been evident from the first attempt to get the service right and it has facilitated collecting further data to improve the appliance model. The software is now crucial to extend the device into a platform that’s capable of making multiple varieties of flatbread.
Clearly, yes. Rotimatic is a device that instantly frees up about an hour from kitchen duty, especially for women who have been playing the part of homemakers. Making flatbreads of any sort is a cumbersome task and the kitchen robot takes the entire process into its stride and compresses it to a matter of minutes. The user decides the sort of bread they wish to prepare, which type and brand of flour to utilize, oil content, the thickness of the rotis, the number of rotis to be made in a batch, and the extent of roasting each roti should undergo.
Compared to the traditional method of making rotis, using the Rotimatic is ridiculously simple, and helps keep pace with a world that is rapidly turning to automation. Rotimatic is available on the official website as well as on Amazon.

The post Are Roti-Making Machines Keeping Traditional Cuisines Alive Among NRIs? appeared first on Rotimatic.
]]>The advent of automation into the domestic sphere has introduced a new genre of self-sufficient kitchen appliance – automatic roti makers. Machines like Rotimatic keep the authentic taste of traditional cuisines alive.
Automation is not just about our future but also our present. While we are yet to realize our complete potential in robotics and automation, we have come a long way. We have entrusted automated machines with the most crucial of tasks such as bank transactions, health care, and even national defense and security.
The ingress of automation can be understood even more clearly from a prediction made by Professor Henrik Christensen, from the University of California San Diego’s Contextual Robotics Institute. He says that children born this year would never drive cars as self-driving cars would become commonplace by the time they grow up.
Robotics and Automation have also entered our domestic spheres and into the kitchen setting ground for a smart kitchen revolution. One of such machines gaining popularity is the range of automatic roti making machines that keep traditional food alive among the generation pressed for time.
The prototypes of domestic automated machinery, or, domotics, entered homes in the early 1900s. They were powered by gas or electricity. These include washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, sewing machines, and water heaters. Initially, these could only be afforded by the rich and elite. As electricity became available more widely and prices of electrical appliances decreased, they made their way into the homes of the middle-class families. Today, these have become essential household appliances.
The present generation of appliances includes smart gadgets that are equipped with sensors, AI-enabled to upgrade and autocorrect themselves. Their other defining features has them IOT enabled, connecting them to a web interface, operable via smartphones or voice control devices such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
One of the generation appliances, Rotimatic is an automatic roti-maker that’s AI and IoT enabled. There are quite a few automatic roti-makers available in the market but Rotimatic is the first of its kind. You can know more about Rotimatic here.
You will find a machine available in the market for almost every task you do in the kitchen, there are mixers, grinders, coffee makers, and dishwashers to name a few.
In comparison, there aren’t automatic roti making appliances available as widely in the market. Roti or chapati is the key ingredient in the meals for about five billion people, and the demand for equipment to make these flatbreads quicker and easier is gradually rising.
One of the major reasons for this could be the fact that roti making isn’t a generic and mechanical process as chopping, grinding or wiping. It is a highly complex task and requires significant human labor. It requires estimating the correct quantity of ingredients for mixing and kneading the dough, and skill to roll it into a perfectly round shape. It continues to know the optimum temperature to roast the rolled out dough to get puffed steaming golden brown rotis.
Making rotis is a skill that is acquired with practice and patience. This makes designing an efficient roti-making machine that is able to perform all of the above processes quite a challenge. There has been some manually operable and semi-automatic roti making devices in the market but that has been sufficiently successful. Recently there have been some attempts at making commercially available automatic roti makers for a household kitchen let us take a look at them:
Priced at a whopping $4000, this one is suited for making chapatis on a large scale such as in a restaurant. Also, it makes semi-cooked chapatis at the speed of about 800 chapatis or rotis per hour. All you are required to do is make dough balls and put them into the hopper machine. It requires a warm-up time of about twenty minutes.
This one is also suitable for making rotis on a large scale. It is designed to knead the dough, make dough balls, and flatten them into evenly round rotis. However, it doesn’t bake the rotis. That essential and final step in the strenuous roti making process in left out in doughbot.
This automatic roti maker is designed for a domestic household kitchen. It performs all the steps in the process of roti making from kneading the dough to making dough balls, rolling them into round discs, and baking them under a record time of 90 seconds. Moreover, it allows you to customize your roti as it lets you choose the levels of thickness, the degree of roasting your roti, flour type, and oil content. Branded as a roti making robot, Rotimatic is AI and IoT-enabled.
Although the advantages of these machines greatly outnumber its disadvantages, here are a couple of them that can’t be ignored:
Automatic roti makers are expensive but they are an investment for a better lifestyle, similar to investments that we make in other electric appliances in the house. Moreover, a smart roti maker such as Rotimatic is enabled with sensors, software, AI, and IoT which enhance its performance manifold and makes it worth your money.
The rotis made by automatic roti makers are not the exact replicas of handmade rotis but are just as healthy and fresh. The difference in taste is not as much of a disadvantage and is just a matter of getting used to.
For women who are always grappling with domestic responsibilities as well as career-related pressures, these automatic roti makers can prove to be empowering assistants. For people living away from home or who do not know how to make rotis, these roti makers can bring them a taste of home. For future generations, who will not have to learn to make rotis this could mean a revolution. So is it wise to invest in the new generation of smart automatic roti makers? If you depend on rotis for a good meal, the answer is a definite yes. You can purchase yours from Amazon or the official website.

]]>Automatic roti makers such as Rotimatic is generating interest for its capability to economize the time spent on cooking.
In the world of food technology and machinery, appliances such as coffee makers, blenders, microwaves, and dishwashers have revolutionized cooking and simplified our lives. A recent addition to this list would be semi-automatic to fully automatic roti makers. The benefits of these advances in the domestic space have been seen to impact students, young professionals, and homemakers – especially women.
Nonetheless, as compared to other functions, the tedious process of making rotis or phulkas, chapattis and other types of flatbreads are largely undertaken manually. Talk to any South Asian with a knack for, or in the habit of consuming rotis and you’ll know how tedious and monotonous the process of making those can be. The steps are multiple and involve a high degree of complexity. The intricacy further diversifies when you take into consideration the variant or type of roti preferred in a different household.
Dig a little deeper and you’ll know that it’s a vast range to choose from. Some households like their roti thin and soft, while some like their rotis slightly thicker and well roasted. Some prefer to flavour their rotis with ghee or butter while others prefer to have it plain. Few households add oil to knead the dough while few households opt for water to do the same. ]]>Flatbreads, or rotis as they are commonly known in India and its neighboring countries, is a staple food for millions. Consequently, as youngsters migrate from their countries – be it to pursue academics or a career – they take a part of their culture with them. Pressed for time yet keen to enjoy the familiar taste from back home, they are quick to turn to automatic roti-makers to significantly cut down the effort put into making a traditional Indian flatbread.
Roti-making machines have been around for quite some time, and have evolved with the advancements in technology. Depending on the degree of automation they provide, the most popular ones in the market right now can be divided under the following categories:
A random google search on Roti or Chapati makers would enlighten you on the number of manually operated Roti makers available for sale online as well as in the market. Reputable kitchen appliance brands, such as Prestige, Bajaj, and Panasonic to name a few, have launched at least one model of a manually operated roti maker. The process of making a roti using these involves kneading the dough to make extra soft dough balls. These are pressed into thin discs between the heated lid and pan of the appliance where it puffs on reaching the optimum temperature within minutes.
Semi-automatic or fully automatic variants of roti makers are popular as well. Some of them require human supervision and involvement which varies from minimal to average. However, these semi-automatic or automatic roti makers are huge in size and capacity. They are designed to operate in places where rotis need to be manufactured in large quantities as they dole out 600-900 rotis per hour, and are ideal for restaurants. Therefore, these roti makers would not fit into an average kitchen as they are massive and perhaps too expensive to suit the purpose.
The new addition in the smart world of smartphones, smartwatches, and smart gadgets is a smart roti maker. Unlike the other variants, this category has just one player in the market going by the name Rotimatic Roti maker. The device is enabled with Artificial Intelligence and IoT. It is designed to upgrade and autocorrect its functions as per requirements.
Rotimatic is built to become a fundamental kitchen fixture for those who have busy schedules or just want to dedicate more time to leisure activities. It is the size of an average microwave and can easily fit into a household kitchen.
The process of making a perfectly baked roti using this automatic roti maker is simple. All you have to do is pour the ingredients and press a few buttons. Rotimatic will dish out fresh rotis for you in less than 90 seconds.
Take a simultaneous look at various features of roti makers currently available in the market in the data compiled underneath:
It is important to not hoard unnecessary gadgets. However, it is also equally important to wisely choose the ones that make our lives easy by cutting down on the effort, hassle, maintenance cost, cost of installation, and energy consumption. Since roti makers are an investment, it always pays to pick one after thorough research on it.
